While the financial crisis was going on, people were still busy playing video games in 2008.
The Android operating system was released to the world, shaping the iOS/Android debate for years to come, with the world gradually leaving BlackBerries and Symbian devices in the dust. Speaking of which, iPhone's App Store is unleashed, paving the way for the mobile gaming market as we know it today. The Nintendo DSi is released as an upgrade to the original Nintendo DS.
The E for All trade show runs for its second and final time. Though the released games were a fair share of ports, licensed titles and sequels (including the cult classic Nintendo DS Chrono Trigger remaster), stuff like Spore and quartet of fourquels Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Persona 4 were big, along with the much-hyped Grand Theft Auto IV, raking in US$500 million during its first week. Rare releases its final game for a Nintendo system, that being Viva Piñata: Pocket Paradise.
The cult indie RPG OFF is also released that year, though it wouldn't be big until an English fan translation was released a few years later.
