2023 starts with the discontinuation of the short-lived Google Stadia cloud streaming service and the longer-lived 3DS and Wii U eShop digital stores. Things picked up when indie games like Pizza Tower became widely popular.
Classic and modern game franchises alike made the rounds with highly-anticipated new outings. Street Fighter 6 returned to form, Final Fantasy XVI went back to its medieval fantasy roots, Pikmin 4 and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 received critical acclaim, and both Sonic Superstars and Super Mario Bros. Wonder introduced new twists on old formulas. The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass DLC concludes its almost decade-long run for Mario Kart 8, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom wows fans, critics, and even developers the same way its prequel did. E3 finally announces that they’ve kicked the bucket for good after a string of cancellations.
Several more gaming adaptations were made by Hollywood as well, such as a TV adaptation of The Last of Us that was a smash hit. Nintendo and Illumination (the creators of Despicable Me) try their hand at a Super Mario Bros. movie once again after their previous attempt in 1993 floundered, this time turning out to be a success, becoming the highest grossing video game-based film worldwide. There was also a Gran Turismo movie as well.
On a more somber note, Charles Martinet stepped down as the official voice of Mario and co. after nearly 30 years of service, succeeded by Kevin Afghani.
