1988 was a packed year with new games, consoles, and computers.
Sega released their 16-bit home console known as the Mega Drive in Japan, released in North America as the Genesis the following year. Apple releases the Apple IIc Plus and Macintosh IIx computers. Several video game companies are established this year including Arc System Works, DMA Design, FarSight Studios, Natsume, and Sony Imagesoft to name a few.
The first commercially released Tetris game came out. While Japan's Famicom boom begins to wind down, Nintendo unveils the 16-bit Super Famicom in the territory, though it would take a couple years to actually release. Also in Japan, Super Mario Bros. 3 comes out, which takes a while to release overseas. In the meantime, such territories get Doki Doki PanicSuper Mario Bros. 2, though chip shortages make it hard to find at the time.
