As COVID-19 restrictions began to ease up, 2022 had a slow start aside from Amazon Luna, their answer to the Google Stadia. However, a number of critically acclaimed titles came that spring, such as Elden Ring, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. There was also a trio of threequels from Nintendo with Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Splatoon 3, and the long-awaited Bayonetta 3. Valve threw its hat in the handheld-gaming ring with the Steam Deck, which released to generally positive reception.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe made a surprise comeback with the Booster Course Pass DLC, adding a whopping 48 courses to the game's already plentiful lineup of courses. The JellyCar franchise that was dormant for 11 years finally returned with a new entry in the series, being JellyCar Worlds.
Controversially, Overwatch ended its online service, forcing gamers onto its free-to-play sequel instead. FIFA ended its 30-year-deal with EA, and FIFA 23 became the last game in that series, which was succeeded by the FC series of games in the following year.
And let's take a moment of silence for Rieko Kodama, creator of Phantasy Star and Skies of Arcadia, who unfortunately passed away on May 9th. May she rest in peace.
