4K monitors and televisions start getting less expensive, which results in many people entering into the magical world of 4K. Eventually, movies and games would start to take advantage of it. A few unusual games such as Goat Simulator and Octodad: Dadliest Catch come out in the year, both unexpectedly gaining viral popularity. Nintendo launches the first waves of their toys-to-life line, amiibo (all lowercase), to coincide with the release of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It leads to a sudden craze when certain amiibo figures turn out to be playing hard-to-get. SEGA also announces the short-lived Sonic Boom subseries, which lead to a heavily divided reception upon it's tie-in series and video games.
The Jackbox Party Pack begins their first annual instalment, giving the virtual board game craze newfound popularity. Also, The Sims 4 is released, where it would get years of life support of content. The Yo-kai Watch series becomes a cultural icon in Japan, with the release of Yo-kai Watch 2 and the franchise itself getting a localization in the following year.
And yes... this was the year that Five Night at Freddy's released, in which it began the "mascot horror" genre. The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth also released that year as well as Freedom Planet, Town of Salem and The Escapists (not to be confused with reviewers The Escapists) being a Prison Simulator, which most other games would follow the formula of.
Unfortunately, this is the year when Wi-Fi services for Nintendo DS/Wii games would be discontinued, thanks to the shutdown of GameSpy.
