The COVID-19 pandemic continued to wreak havoc on the world, shuttering stores worldwide for another year of lockdown amidst mass vaccination efforts. That didn't stop new releases though, as Hitman 3 released, putting an end to its trilogy of assassination, and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury was released, becoming another Switch port of a Wii U game. Nintendo also released remakes of Famicom Detective Club: The Missing Heir and Famicom Detective Club: The Girl Who Stands Behind, an adventure game duology previously exclusive to Japan. They also released Metroid Dread after 15 years of rumors and 20 years since the last mainline installment was released. To top it all off, Nintendo released the Switch OLED, sporting a larger, more vivid screen, more storage, a better kickstand, and an ethernet-equipped dock.
Due to shortages as a result of COVID-19, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X remained sold out through much of the year. That didn't stop developers from releasing a number of games for both systems, such as Returnal, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Halo Infinite and Psychonauts 2. Of course, there were also quite a few titles that released for both last gen and current gen.
Microsoft officially released Windows 11, which was criticized for its system requirements and bloatware, while the video streaming service Netflix opted into the world of gaming with Netflix Games.
