The Nintendo 3DS gets off to a rocky start, which is titled the "3DS drought" among the fandom. Come a decent price cut and several critically-acclaimed titles like Super Mario 3D Land and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, however, its performance quickly does a 180 and it proves its worth as another wildly successful Nintendo handheld. A gigantic earthquake and tsunami off the eastern coast of Japan impact the video game industry, delaying software releases.
iOS 5 gets released, allowing games to not only be multiplayer, but also give you notifications. Android 3.0 and 4.0 come out as well.
On the toys side of things, Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure is released, fully kickstarting the "toys-to-life" trend throughout most of the decade, with other companies getting in on the action. Wappy Dog is also released, as an innovative physical toy for the Nintendo DS. THQ's uDraw suffers a sharp decline after its launch for other seventh-generation console systems, with production stopping into the next year and becomes one of the factors towards the company's decline.
Minecraft is also "completed" this year, though huge content updates continue to happen to this day. After much hype and marketing, Saints Row: The Third was also released to rave reviews, but had an overall divisive fan reception. Duke Nukem Forever is finally released after its lengthy 15-year development but becoming an epic disappointment.
