After a long absence, one violence-neutered crossover and the demise of Midway, Mortal Kombat returns to 2D gameplay, bigger and bloodier than ever! Thanks to sharing a title with the 1992 debut of the series, it's come to be known by most as Mortal Kombat 9.

Sub-Page#

Unused Characters#

Skarlet#

Watch on YouTubeAn unfinished version of Skarlet exists on the disc, which uses Jade's stance and Mileena's profile picture as placeholders. Also of interest is the fact that Skarlet's alternate costume is on-disc.

Upon official release, the alternate costume was not included with the character and went unused, though it would later be made available in the Vita edition.

DLC BaseMale#

Watch on YouTubeA placeholder character with no special moves, and bare minimum playability, that may have been used to test DLC character slots. Inexplicably, when selected, the announcer states "Fujin!", which may imply that the Wind God character Fujin was intended to appear (or, just as likely, that Netherrealm retained their previous love for playing pranks via unused content).

Fujin would later appear in Mortal Kombat X as a Story Mode-only character, and referenced in Cassie Cage's Selfie fatality (where Ed Boon wonders if anyone has unlocked him), and eventually added as DLC character in Mortal Kombat 11.

NPC BaseMale#

Similar to the above, but uses Sub-Zero's stance and basic attacks, as well as his lifebar icon and a BUG_ME name. This character is also voice-less in-game but extracting sound files within his package reveals that he used Kano's voice clips from MKvsDCU!

Jax's Gun#

MK9-JaxGun.png MK9-TYLJaxicon.png

Jax was meant to have a submachine gun in battle, much like his previous appearance in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. It was scrapped, but you can still see this gun occasionally. Two examples of this gun in action is when you do a Fatality on him and in his Test your Luck icon. The sound clips for this (also from the previous game) can be found in Jax's files. In Mortal Kombat X, Jax gets his gun back in his Heavy Weapons variation.

Unused Sounds#

The game has quite a ton of unused sounds. Most of them are simply leftover from the previous game, while some are just voice clips that never made it through.

SFX for the lightning charge being ready.

sfx_raid_charge_up

Liu Kang#

vo_liuk_lkcycle

Liu Kang saying some Kung-Fu gibberish. In the final game he is silent during the Bicycle Kick, where this would have been used.

vo_liuk_lkcycle_mk3

Similar to the above but based off of his voice clip from Mortal Kombat 3.

vo_liuk_lkflyk1

A unique voice clip for the Flying Kick. In the final game one of his "Special Attack" voice clips is used instead.

vo_liuk_lkspink

Not sure where this would have been used, as Liu Kang has no "Spin Kick" in this game.

Sub-Zero#

vo_sub1_char_intro01

Probably just a cut feature of Bi-Han's costume for Sub-Zero having his own intro line, similarly to human versions of Cyrax and Sektor having different intro lines. Choosing Bi-Han's costume indeed changes Sub-Zero's voice when in battle, though his intro remains unchanged. Interestingly enough, this line actually can be heard in the second chapter of story mode; Bi-Han says it to Sonya right before the fight with him begins. However, the story mode version of this line is longer and sounds different, so it's presumably a completely different take rather than just a line from story mode with first few words removed.

Cyber Sub-Zero#

vo_sub0_vict_laugh01

Sub-Zero laughing. His human form doesn't have this voice clip, which means it was meant for a scrapped winpose unique to his cyber-form.

Unused Name Art#

Some characters have unused art in their respective package files. These are the characters name, done in a way that's fitting for them (Such as Jax's name being metallic). These are leftovers from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, where they were used in the character biographies.

Unused Text#

Unused Challenge Tower Text#

Among the data for the Challenge Tower lies data for an unused challenge, featuring the scrapped Brutality finisher.

No Mercy Challenge#

NO_MERCY_TITLE=No Mercy!
NO_MERCY_DETAILS="[-]Quick time event!"
NO_MERCY_MSG_1=Focus yourself for the final blow to perform a brutality.

Unused Character Bios#

Nekropolis Bios for the boss characters Goro, Kintaro, and Shao Kahn exist in-game. As they are unplayable by normal means, they go unused.

Goro#

Prince Goro has brought much honor to the Shokan race by serving Shao Kahn. His bloody
achievements include crushed rebellions and conquered provinces. During the past 500 years
he has been celebrated for winning the last nine Mortal Kombat tournaments for Outworld.
Should he defeat Earthrealm's champion this time, he will become more than legendary. His
victory is assured. There are none in Earthrealm who can withstand the might of Goro.

Kintaro#

Like Goro and Sheeva, Kintaro is of the four-armed Shokan race. Unlike his aristocratic
comrades, however, he is of lower-class Tigrar lineage. As is customary when recruiting
Shokan and Centaur into Shao Kahn's service, one of each race must face each other in
bloody kombat. Kintaro killed his opponent and, in an unprecedented act of bravado, roared
for more Centaur blood. Centaurs leapt furiously into the ring to their demise. This savagery
led Shao Kahn to appoint Kintaro his personal bodyguard.

Shao Kahn#

Emperor Shao Kahn's lust for power is matched only by his ruthlessness. Millenia ago he
overthrew Onaga as ruler of Outworld and has conquered many other realms since. Eventually
he turned his attention to Earthrealm. The Mortal Kombat tournament prevents him from taking
the realm by force, but if Shao Kahn's champions win 10 consecutive tournaments, Earthrealm
will be his. As long as his champions Shang Tsung and Prince Goro do not fail him, he will be
victorious.

Unused Ending Text#

The first line of the unused ending text. The rest of it can't be seen as the credits interrupt.

Endings for Goro and Kintaro exist, yet Shao Kahn lacks one.

Goro#

For millennia Shao Kahn had toyed with the proud Shokan race, continuously demanding they prove
their worth against the hated Centaur. Goro slew the emperor, ending this indignity.
He then used Shao Kahn’s blood to paint runic symbols on his body—an ancient Shokan ritual of
succession.
Suddenly the runes began to glow, searing Goro’s flesh.
Incredible power surged through him.
Goro became Drathon, the Destroyer Prince prophesized to exterminate the Centaur and reunite the
Shokan bloodlines.

Kintaro#

Kintaro's meteoric rise to glory in the service of Shao Kahn had inflated his ego and his hunger
for exaltation.
But his position as the emperor's bodyguard had stifled any opportunity for further achievement
or recognition--save one.
After killing Shao Kahn, the most powerful being in Outworld, Kintaro's fame had grown indeed.
He had achieved the notoriety of a traitor. Now hunted by the Centaur, Tarkatan and Shokan,
Kintaro lives a life of exile, a victim of his own infamy.

Development Oversights#

Story Mode#

Sheeva in her alternate costume in the mk047 cutscene.

During Chapter 10, after the fight against Sheeva, she can be seen in her alternate costume, despite her using her main one prior to and in the battle.
