Games released in 2025

Nintendo entered the next generation with the Nintendo Switch 2, with better specs, though with controversially inflated prices all around.

Overall, it was a quiet year for big-name titles, but there were some big comebacks like Donkey Kong Bananza (with a Mario movie-inspired redesign), THE iDOLM@STER TOURS, Kirby Air Riders, Inazuma Eleven and Fantasy Life i, Shinobi and Ninja Gaiden (branded as the year of the Ninja by Koei Tecmo). Games that spent a while in development also finally came out, such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Hollow Knight: Silksong and the paid, but not yet full, release of the highly anticipated Deltarune.

Layoffs continued to occur throughout the game industry with Microsoft and Xbox Game Studios, Square Enix's international operations, EA and Sony's Bend Studio, among others. Tekken series creator Katsuhiro Harada retired from Bandai Namco after 30 years, leaving Tekken Project in charge of the franchise going forward.

And let's take a moment of silence for the passings of Tomonobu Itagaki, creator of Dead or Alive and modern Ninja Gaiden, on October 16, Vince Zampella, co-creator of the Call of Duty franchise, on December 21, and David Rosen, co-founder of Sega of America, on December 25. May they rest in peace.
