hollow ataraxia Remastered (2025)

Fate/hollow ataraxia is a visual novel game and the second game in the Fate franchise. It was originally released as an 18+ Japan-only PC release in 2005. The Remastered version was the first official English localization of the actual game, and was based on the Japan-only PlayStation Vita all-ages rerelease.

Unused Text#

Eclipse Scenes#

The game uses localization files that override the contents of the original scene script (which used to contain Japan-only text) with text from other languages such as English or Chinese. For some reason, a full official English translation of the removed scenes from the original +18 version was left among these files, despite the removal of the actual scene script and graphical assets, and no version ever making that content accessible since 2005 even in Japan.

This includes the four side scenes known as Eclipse, where Shirou encounters Saber, Tohsaka, Sakura, or has a threesome in a dream. It doesn't seem to include the uncut script for Caren's suggestive scenes in the main storyline. The translators didn't seem to compromise in any way.

As a side note, Fate/stay night Remastered doesn't seem to have any such leftovers, although this shouldn't be much of a surprise. Unlike Fate/hollow ataraxia, which made some scenes inaccessible, Fate/stay night Réalta Nua and all subsequent versions based on that version overwrote the scenes with the gory, suggestive and sexual content with alternate scenes that take their place.

Revision Differences#

Much like its prequel Fate/stay night, Fate/hollow ataraxia originally featured sexual content. A set of four side chapters, referred to in-game as "Eclipse" scenes, were encounters between the protagonist and the female heroines that culminated into sexual intercourse and had no consequences to the main storyline. Another scene that was part of the main story had some sexually suggestive content as well. The PlayStation Vita rerelease kept the latter scene with the sexual content written out, but the four Eclipse scenes were completely removed. The progression chart and gallery were adjusted to account for this removal. The 2025 Remaster is based on this version, with additional English and Chinese translations.

Some of the minigames included alongside Fate/hollow ataraxia had minor to significant changes in the PlayStation Vita version as well.
