UNBEATABLE

UNBEATABLE [white label] Leftovers#

The game logo, character animations for Beat and Quaver, dialogue trees, and cutscene graphics from UNBEATABLE [white label] are present in the files.

Journal#

As seen in prerelease media, the Journal originally included a diary written by Beat that would update as the story progressed. This tab of the menu would have tracked sidequest progress.

Most elements of the version seen in 2021 footage are present in the object tree for the menu.

The dialogue system contains leftovers for a more recent version of the Journal, with writing and sidequests from Episode Three of the final game:

July 10th
Dear Diary: I Have Escaped From Jail.
the band seems very mad to have escaped from jail because, and i say this in their defense, the place we are in is a toilet
ok
i just realized i wrote "the band" very casually there. uh, so, we're a band now.
we being me, quaver, and the two people we met (again, in jail, which is where we were).
this was more or less just sort of decided by nobody, but i've already been blamed for having the idea. that doesn't seem very fair, since the only reason we did the train thing was to get shot a bit less by drones.
why do cops have drones, anyway
i feel, very strongly, that it should be illegal to give cops drones
also guns? also quaver's literally a child, that's shitty that th-
wait a second. can you arrest a child? could we sue the cops? would we win
NOTE NOTE BEAT BIG FLAG NOTE: investigate law on this matter

journalday2#

July 11th
i had a dream last night that my life wasn't a hurricane of bullshit. that was cool. but at least i slept.
i'm dealing with it okay but the jury is still out on whether it would literally be better to sleep outside or not.
anyway now that we're a "band" we have to put on a "concert" and i think this might go "badly."
clef and treble seem very adamant that we make sure people go to the show, but what if we just did the show for nobody, and nobody came.
would that be better?
now that we have escaped from jail of course the first move is to very loudly tell the world "we are wanted criminals." this is stupid and will not work the way we think it will, but we are doing it anyway.
at least it'd be safer for the audience. will we have to have them sign wavers?
i mean i guess this whole thing is illegal anyway, so maybe it doesn't really matter. but i know like...drug dealers pay taxes, right.
are we in less trouble if we have waivers signed by the audience for our illegal concert than if we don't?

PosterQuest#

PosterQuest
quaver is fully on board with just making a bunch of posters and frankly i don't know why. maybe i should do one, too? quaver has some good ideas, it feels like. i have, on the other hand, no ideas. Maybe I should ask around.

as it turns out, nobody else has any ideas either. while i ended up wasting half my day, though, i did manage to come up with a Very Cool poster. no help from anyone else.
i should head back to the shack and get started on it...

...and it turns out it didn't even take that long.
of course, looking at my poster now... well. let's just use quaver's.
and there's no better place to put it than Directly Over copaganda.
...and it's exactly as cool as i knew it'd be. hell yeah. i'm so cool.
so cool, even, i'll help out this backwater by defacing the bullshit copaganda.

journalday3#

July 12th
quaver hates me now, and honestly it's not really my fault so who cares. we'll have people and that's what matters
i'm pretty excited all told for the concert we're putting on.
i felt kind of weird about it yesterday, but i'm gonna be doing a rock show. a weird rock show, and one where i'm going to be doing mma shit, but a rock show.

the concert is tonight! quaver got extremely mad at me last night, and i felt kind of bad, even though HONESTLY (honestly) i don't actually think i did anything wrong. secretly. very secret.
but i still felt bad. so i put up her poster. maybe we could use mine for something, still.
anyway. excited to do this show, actually. maybe this will go well. something HAS to

stagesetup#

Spotting Lights
clef asked me to grab three spotlights because she's too lazy to find them, but i don't really want to manual labor a stage into existence, so i'll do it

are these really going to make our show cooler? they're just...lights. why <i>am</i> i trusting clef with this?

did she think quaver could lift stage speakers by herself? she's got little baby arms.
you ever just...do a class project by yourself?

yeah, i'm asking you. a stack of papers taped together. have you?
pretty sick of stuff getting left to me all the time
...anyways, apparently she's around whacktown

whacktown#

Ghost in the Pitching Machine
the kids outside of whacktown (that's what it's actually called) are extremely upset about it. what's whacktown? who would call a thing "whacktown."
they looked full-ass traumatized. like "i've seen shit. i've been to The War"
that was how the kids looked.

kids don't fight in-
oh no that's what child soldiers are, right. that's totally been a thing. <s>cool.</s>

<s>child soldiers are not cool obviously</s>

<s>CHILD SOLDIERS ARE BAD</s>

that's not what i mean, i'm going to stop writing

I have Experienced Whacktown.
it was...fine. those kids are just weird, i guess.
it gave me a prize for winning but i don't want it. maybe those kids do

whacktown update: i lied. it was not fine and i had not, at that point, experienced it
the batting cage is absolutely possessed and ghosts are in fact real.
the devil is alive <i>and i am going to kill him</i>

i did

journalbar#

Bar Examination
that bartender is going THROUGH it.
i wonder if i could bartend. tend bar?

you know what i hate? i hate it when people call bartenders "mixologists"
nobody else has ever had this thought. everyone else is really cool with it.
only i, a lone genius, can proudly recognize: it's stupid. just say they're good at making things taste good

i wouldn't call a professional chef a "cookologist"

i would never want to work at a bar, i think, but i'm glad i helped that guy out.

or...guys? is it just the one?
at night, it seems like a completely different person is there.

as it turns out i know less than i thought i did about alcohol. who is sally

Unused Areas#

C4_Shack#

An unused scene that takes place at the shack area during the events of Episode 6. In the final game, Apoco and Poco are found at the (intact) Lighthouse at sunset. Apparently, they would've originally been located at the beach and the Lighthouse was destroyed. They also use their original sprites here, instead of the unique "Nothing" sprites in the final scene. The dialogue trigger still uses the proper dialogue, animation cut, and loads into the boss fight area.

C0_Moped_Escape#

Watch on YouTube

Presumably a prototype version of the moped minigame and setpiece, given the namespace used for this version of the moped minigame (Prototyping.Moped)

The event triggers that control how the setpiece works are no longer functional, the video is a crude reconstruction of what it may have looked like (by manually calling the functions the event trigger would've called), the original scene was not like this.

DEV_LocalizationTest#

Quaver:

Beat: Hey, your name isn't localized!
Quaver: What?
Beat: Yeah!
Quaver: Then I'll take yours.
Beat: Wait, what.
Beat (Quaver's name over her dialogue box is changed to Beat): heh

EN Crest:

Beat: Crest, you're terrible at speaking English.
Crest: You're right!

Clef does not have a Dialogue Trigger.

Unused Graphics#

Temporary album art#

Temporary album art, likely used to test the game's beatmap editor. This texture was replaced with a new version in the 1.9.0 update, and is now used as a fallback album art for custom songs.

Unused album art, likely designed as a placeholder given that it's a preexisting edit of a New Yorker cartoon by Asher Perlman (replacing the Phish logo with art of vtuber Mori Calliope). The edit was first posted on Twitter in 2022 by @TheKnownOtaku.

Placeholder assets#

Placeholders for a Cop.

Placeholders for Crest.

Placeholders for the Moped setpiece in Episode 1.

A doodle of Snoopy from the comic strip Peanuts, used as a placeholder item icon.

Storyboards for a cut sequence from "Bang!" in Episode 2. Work-in-progress animations associated with this sequence are included in a showcase of UNBEATABLE material on Camile Cee's website.

Bartending mockup#

A mockup of the bartending minigame.

Unused Characters#

Chef#

He apparently would've been present in the Ramen Shop. An earlier version of his design was seen in pre-release material.

Mindy#

Unused character "Mindy" located in the game files. Her outfit implies that she would've been present in the prison. A much earlier design of the character was present in the 2019-era version of the game. The only publicly available images of her from that point in time are a meme posted to X by the D-CELL devs and an emote of her used in the UNBEATABLE Discord server.

  • "Mic Check" is given custom cover art by Jesse Ebmeier; the song previously used the unbeatable [ost] cover.

Version 2.0#

D-CELL, per their account, "learn how to count" with this update, launched concurrently with the June 25, 2026 announcement presentation:

  • Two new bonuses are added to Arcade Mode, both unlocked by beating Story Mode. If Story Mode has already been completed, these are unlocked automatically upon installing the update:
    • "Way Back When" is added as a playable song.
    • Eve, Grace, and Rest (OMF) are added as playable characters.
  • Poco, Apoco, Crest, Crest (Maid), DC, Penny, and Sforzando are added as playable characters in Arcade Mode for players who've purchased the Breakout Edition expansion. Most of them are unlocked by default, while Crest (Maid) and Sforzando are respectively unlocked by playing as Crest 50 times in Arcade Mode and completing Story Mode.
  • Additional challenge folios are added to both the base game and the Breakout Edition.
  • Various bugs in rhythm gameplay are patched, most notably a longtime glitch where dodged spike notes placed alongside held notes would incorrectly register as misses. As a side effect, spike note spam is significantly reduced in songs that previously featured it as an aesthetic effect, e.g. "Proper Rhythm (All There Is To It)" and the Breakout Edition-exclusive "Afterburn".
  • Assist Mode is refined to improve reliability.
  • Several changes are made to the options menu:
    • A toggle to reduce strobing effects is added for players with epilepsy or other forms of photosensitivity.
    • The player can now change the color scheme for the baseball minigame's effects.
    • In Arcade Mode, the player can now disable the animations of Silence flying off-screen to reduce visual clutter during gameplay. Instead, they simply pop away when hit.
    • Preexisting options are rearranged to accommodate the additional ones.
  • For fights in Story Mode where the game advances regardless of the outcome, the player now has the option to retry or move on if they lose.
  • The audio-video synchronization of Eve's finger snaps during the lead-in to Episode 0 is fixed.
  • "APB" is now given a Star difficulty chart, labeled "run that back!!!" in-game.
  • Background characters in Arcade Mode now change based on which two characters the player currently has active, rather than displaying UNBEATABLE consistently. Additionally, UNBEATABLE members will no longer appear in the background if they are currently the selected main or assist character.
  • The charts for "Waiting" are modified to adjust synchronization.
  • The Playback stage is added to Arcade Mode in the PC version. This stage features monitors that display videos in time with the music, intended for use with the songs included in UNBEATABLE - THE JAMIE PAIGE CONTENT COMPANION.
  • Fixed two glitches in the PS5 version:
    • A bug where clearing Challenge 10 of Folio 9 (logging in on a D-CELL staff member's birthday) resets the player's Challenge Mode progress.
    • A bug where viewing certain Challenge Mode folios after receiving a notification would crash the game.

Version 2.0.1#

  • The Playback stage is adjusted to allow players to import MP4 and WEBM files to display on the monitors in the background for custom songs.
  • The high score calculation system is modified to "better separate individual aspects of a score (combo, accuracy, game score) to better prevent cases where a high score with lower accuracy damages your rating."

Version 2.0.2#

  • Fixed a glitch that prevented the game from registering when the player completed Challenge 2 in Folo 13 and Challenge 7 in Final Folio.
  • Fixed a glitch that causes the game to occasionally softlock at the end of rhythm gameplay (most frequently during Beat's dream sequences in Episode 2).

Version 2.0.3#

  • Additional bugfixes concerning beatmaps.
  • A save backup system is added, as is a system that warns the player when their save data is corrupted.
  • Fixes an issue that causes rhythm gameplay to slow down before the final note.
  • Fixed various bugs regarding character animations in rhythm gameplay.
  • Amended the cheat code that unlocks all Story Mode songs (up x16, down x4, left x2, right x1, up x8 on the song selection screen) so that it also unlocks Story Mode-dependent tracks that were added to arcade mode in updates.

Version 2.1.0#

Released simultaneously with Version 2.2.0.

  • Adds support for UNBEATABLE - THE JAMIE PAIGE CONTENT COMPANION, the game's first paid DLC pack. If the DLC hasn't been purchased, this update makes no outward changes.

Version 2.2.0#

Released simultaneously with Version 2.1.0.

  • "NOT LOSING" is added to Arcade Mode.
  • The player can now toggle the game's text between English, Japanese, and simplified Chinese.
  • The player can now toggle subtitles for Story Mode cutscenes under the "Audio" category in the options menu.
  • Fixed a bug in Episode 4's version of the bartending minigame that causes it to loop endlessly on the first customer.

Version 2.3.0#

  • "MOON CHILD (UNBEATABLE'S LOVEADELIC RPG ADVENTURE REMIX)", "MOON CHILD (WINDOWS MIX)", "MOON CHILD (AMIGA MIX)", and "Cryogenic" by Camellia ft. Petra Gurin (from In Falsus) are added to Arcade Mode.
  • The game's save system is updated to prevent data from being lost or corrupted and to prevent partially written and empty files from overwriting existing data.
  • The game's file size is reduced.
  • The player is now able to directly replay previously encountered Story Mode setpieces through the Episode Select menu.
  • Various changes are made to optimize performance across both Story Mode and Arcade Mode.
  • Fixed the following translation errors in the simplified Chinese localization:
    • "Bar" is correctly translated; the original was mistranslated as "Ramen Bar".
    • The translation for "Timing Offset" is corrected.
    • The transliteration for Quaver's name in the subtitles preceding Chapter 1's setpiece is corrected.
  • Fixed the "awkward writing" in the Japanese subtitles for "BANG!"
  • Fixed the final setpiece's subtitle formatting.
  • Pause menu text sizing is altered in the simplified Chinese and Japanese versions.
  • Various rhythm game bugs are fixed.
  • "Fixed a UI issue related to normal difficulty song and beatmap information"
  • "Minor improvements to latency in the core rhythm gameplay."

Version 2.4.0#

  • "It May Be Greenish -That Future of Ours-" and "shut up until i'm done" are added to Arcade Mode.
  • "Empty Diary" is now given a Star difficulty chart, labeled "[UNWRITTEN]" in-game.
  • Various additional audio features are added:
    • Audio Stream Input/Output audio support is added.
    • The player can also now toggle which audio device the game uses.
    • The player can toggle audio latency. Per the patch notes, "lower values reduce latency, but may cause audio crackling."
  • Various unspecified "additional save/load/backup issues" are fixed.
  • Text sizing in Arcade Mode is adjusted to increase the amount of characters allowed before a cutoff.
  • The default stage for "NO EULOGIES" (a song from UNBEATABLE - THE JAMIE PAIGE CONTENT COMPANION) is changed to play the song's music video.
