The Nintendo World Championships happen, with the few carts given out as prizes being among the most coveted items among NES game collectors. So coveted are the carts that they can fetch for upwards of $100,000 US. The Game Genie is released to the world, becoming a major device for hackers and cheaters, particularly on the NES. Wing Commander, Commander Keen and The Secret of Monkey Island are released for DOS computers, becoming staples for their respective genres. Windows 3.0 is released, providing a much needed GUI update for the OS. Nintendo finally releases the Super Nintendo Famicom in Japan, while the non-Super variant of the Famicom's Super Mario Bros. 3 is released in the US for the NES to much fanfare.
