Success Joe

Success Joe is an extremely rare Punch-Out!!-esque game featuring characters from the Ashita no Joe manga.

Regional Differences#

The Japanese version displays a copyright notice on boot. The World version doesn't have an equivalent notice, and instead goes straight to the Taito logo and intro sequence.

The controls have been translated, the closeup of Joe's eyes was removed and the "PUSH 1P or 2P" written using a unique font was rewritten using the standard font in the World version.

I MIGHT HAVE LOST... I'd really like to know what he's pointing with that nasty finger?

Here's the umpteenth example of the Japanese version being the better one.

The Japanese version has not one, but two continue screens:

  • The first one is shown if you lose against Mammoth Nishi, Toru Rikiishi, and Harimao, depicting the neighborhood kids (Sachi, Kinoko, Tarō, Chūkichi, Tonkichi, and Chibi) being upset at you for losing.
  • The second one is shown if you lose against Wolf Kanagushi, Carlos Libera, and Jose Mendoza, depicting Joe shouting to the public for whatever reason.

The World version went to the minimal effort to have just one continue screen when you lose against every opponent, depicting the typical Taito instructions on a black background.

...BUT I DIDN'T RETIRE!
Additionally, if you continue when the first continue screen is shown, the neighborhood kids become happy again.
