The Nintendo Switch was released as the successor to the Wii U. It went on to sell more units in 2017 alone than the Wii U's lifetime sales in certain regions. Microsoft also released the Xbox One X, a mid-gen refresh which promised even higher-quality graphics, full 4K resolution and faster frame rates. And Nintendo capped off the year with the SNES Classic Edition, which led to the release of Star Fox 2, finally free from the unreleased games void 21 years after its cancelled release.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is released, becoming a hot best-seller, and is both the swan song of the Wii U and the grand opener for the Switch. Star Wars Battlefront II took on some heat by making players spend money to get characters and higher rankings. Yooka-Laylee is marred by controversy and is subsequently met with mixed reviews, while A Hat in Time fares a lot better. NieR: Automata was a solid hit and gained quite the following, and Conatus Creative released River City Ransom Underground, which revived the Kunio-Kun franchise and led to a duology two years later. And finally, Crash Bandicoot made his big comeback with Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy.
