LEGO City Undercover (Windows, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch)

This article has a talk page!
view on tcrf.net

A multiplatform and PC port of a previously Wii U-exclusive LEGO game, with all of the gameplay mechanics being redone to accommodate one screen.

Notable for not only being the first LEGO game to be released for the Nintendo Switch, but also the fact that all references to the Super Mario series were removed from the non-Nintendo versions.

Oddities#

Titanic Characters#

The Titanic parody characters, Samson Crow and Violet De Burgh, are internally named after the actors, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.

(Source: RandomWizKid)

Cheats#

The internal name of the pig ringtone is CHEAT_RINGTONE_MARIO, which might mean that it was originally a Mario sound effect.

The unused Mario Hat Red Brick is internally called CHEAT_CHRISTMAS, which is a leftover from LEGO Harry Potter.

Hair Pieces#

HAIR_CHASEMCCANE
LCU_HAIR_CHASEMCCANE_RENDER.png
The HAIR_CHASEMCCANE hair piece is actually a version of his hair from E3 2011, and is used for the Paul Wimpenny character. The hair that Chase uses in the final game is named HAIR_SHORTTOUSLED.

HAIR_FORRESTBLACKWELL
LCU_HAIR_FORRESTBLACKWELL_RENDER.png
The hair piece that is named HAIR_FORRESTBLACKWELL is used for Moe Deluca. it could mean that it was used for an earlier version of Forrest. The hair piece that Forrest does use is called HAIR_FORESTBLACK.

HAIR_EMMETBROWN
LCU_HAIR_EMMETBROWN_RENDER.png
Professor Kowalski's hair piece is named HAIR_EMMETBROWN which is a reference to Back To The Future.

HAIR_WILL_TURNER
LCU_HAIR_WILL_TURNER_RENDER.png
The hair piece that Li uses is internally called HAIR_WILL_TURNER who is a character from LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean.

Old Icons#

The Janitor and Gemma Jones are the only characters in the remaster that still use their Wii U icons. For some reason they didn't update them.

Platform Differences#

To do:
There may be more that hasn't been documented yet.

Changes from the Wii U version#

  • The game's mechanics have been reworked to accommodate the lack of a second screen For some examples:
    • The minimap is now displayed in the bottom left corner of the screen.
    • Using the scanner is now controlled with the left stick, as opposed to motion controls.
  • The UI has been redesigned, with the circle character icons now being hexagons. A lot of the icons have been re-rendered in a higher resolution as well.
  • Support for 2-player co-op has been added.
  • Visuals have been adjusted due to the game now using the DX11 version of the Nu2 engine (as opposed to the NXG version):
    • Screen-space ambient occlusion is present in the PS4/Xbox One/PC version.
    • The game's general lighting appears to have been reworked.
    • For reasons unknown, planar reflections used throughout the game now only show the stage terrain, instead of also including characters/objects.
    • All baked lighting appears to have been redone.
    • Textures are now in a higher resolution.
  • Performance is now more consistent compared to the Wii U version.
  • The Taxi Cab's black and white stripes were changed to all black in the remaster.

Wii U

Remaster

  • Chase McCain's scanner is now colored black, as opposed to the Wii U version's white.

General#

  • The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions run at 30fps in the open world, but 60fps during levels. The Switch version targets 30fps in both. The PC version instead uses whatever frame-rate option is picked in the game settings.
  • The PS4 and Switch versions render at 1920x1080, the Xbox One version renders at 1400x1080.
    • In handheld mode, the Switch version uses nearest-neighbor scaling to resize the game from 1920x1080 to 1280x720. As the game still renders in the former resolution, this results in heavy performance issues in this mode.
  • The Switch version has some visual cutbacks and looks closer to the Wii U version in various cases (such as the lack of screen-space ambient occlusion, lower texture quality, etc.) Oddly enough, reflections are in a lower resolution than they were in the Wii U version.
  • One cutscene has a strange rendering error in the Switch version that isn't present in any of the others, including the original Wii U version.1

Nintendo References#

Careful, you'll lose an eye.

This page or section needs more images.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.

Nintendo references were only kept in the Switch version (barring the Mario hat red brick, which goes unused), and were removed from all other versions for obvious reasons.

Question Blocks#

The hidden question blocks were replaced with Rex Fury graffiti statues.

Switch

Windows

Super Stars#

The stars were replaced with police badges. The music was also replaced.

Switch

Windows

Warp Pipe#

The classic green warp pipe that sent you to Liberty Island was replaced with an astronaut teleport pad.

Switch

Windows

Flag Pole#

The flag pole in Fort Meadows was changed to a generic flag.

Switch

Windows

Piranha Plant#

The Piranha Plant puzzle was replaced with a generic flower, leaving the cave next to it empty.

Dry Bones Statue#

The Dry Bones statue in the Museum level was replaced with a Rex Fury handle gate, leaving the dialogue for the reference unused as well.

Super Star Balloon Shaped#

The Super Star balloon that appears in Festival Square had the eyes removed.

Cheep Cheep#

The Cheep Cheep that is caught in Crescent Park has been replaced with a normal fish.

Big Cheep Cheep eating a shark#

The button that spawns a small Cheep Cheep that is saved by a large Cheep Cheep was removed, making the scene unplayable.

Wiggler#

The Wiggler that wanders back and forth above an ivy-covered tunnel entrance in Bluebell National Park has disappeared, leaving the top of the entrance empty.

Bob-omb#

The buildable Bob-omb used to break the cage containing Chan Chuang's token was removed, while also adding a Rex Fury handle in the process.

Bullet Bills#

Kings Court cannons no longer fire Bullet Bills, so a Rex Fury handle was added to the cage to get the token.

TEST1.TXT#

To do:
This is not a standard text file; check it's data, possibly a file list. There appears to be a lot of named file paths leading to models and textures. Check if it's present on other versions.

TEST1.TXT references the Internal Name from the original Wii U release (Project_Kestrel) and a couple of strings of text referencing file paths. Between 0x30607 and 0x30646 of the file contains information and timestamps, likely build dates:

ROTV NUS: 14:24:43 25-10-2016 Converted: 14:25:11 25-10-2016

This is roughly what it (possibly) translates to, based on the current information given. The (possible) time stamps is roughly 7 months before the remaster's official release on all platforms, and 6 months before the release of the Nintendo Switch.

ROTV NUS: 2:24:23PM on October 25th 2016; Converted (Compiled?) at 2:25:11PM on October 25th 2016

Build Date#

To do:
Is this in other versions of the game?

In /STUFF/GAMEVERSION.TXT lists a Build date and time for when the game was compiled. The version listed is not the "day one" version. Based on the strings it's likely based on a PS4 Patch, and was compiled for the PC afterwards.

Internal Name#

The internal name is referenced as Project Kestrel R. Kestrel was the code name of the Wii U version, and R possibly stands for remaster or remastered.
