A Normal Lost Phone

A Normal Lost Phone is a game about finding a lost phone and immediately delving into as much of the owner's personal data as possible, because that's apparently the kind of person you are.

The original prototype of the game, developed during the 2016 Global Game Jam, was released on Game Jolt on February 7, 2016, as a browser game. The full game (Version 1.2.0; a crowdfunded overhaul of the original prototype) was released on Steam, Google Play, and the iOS App Store on January 26, 2017, and on the Nintendo Switch eShop on March 1, 2018. This article concerns the final, full game.

Unused Graphics#

lightning#

A 'lightning' icon, possibly representing the charging of the phone's battery (which stays at the same charge throughout the game). Worth noting also is that the battery icon is actually comprised of two textures – an empty battery and a full battery – which could imply that dynamic charge was planned at some point. It's also possible that the texture is left over from the prototype.

placeholderep#

A placeholder album cover for the songs in the Music app.

enjmin#

ANLP-enjmin.png
The fact that this texture is transparent, with black text, implies that it would have appeared somewhere on a white (or otherwise light) background; the game's credits and title screen both have a black background. École nationale du jeu et des médias interactifs numériques (ENJMIN) means National School of Gaming and Numeric Interactive Media (NSGNIM).

Unused Text#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Are the contents of the 'description' column actually used at all? I thought they might be the internal names of those textures, but I'm not sure.

There are a few images which cannot be saved to the phone's Gallery app, specifically the photos in the Messages and Lovbirds apps; the photo of the Tonio concert, Melissa's drawing, the photo of Melissa's lingerie, and Phil's selfie. Despite this, there are unused details for these photos in the 'gallery' CSV, and corresponding unused responses from Phil (see the Lovbirds section, below). Note that the date for Phil's selfie has the wrong month; it should read 28/01/2016.

E-mail#

There is one email found in the 'email' CSV which does not appear in the E-mail app in-game (because the 'folder' column is left empty in the CSV). The email is a purchase confirmation email for the wig that Sam bought on September 10, 2015.

Phil will send different responses depending on which images the player sends to him. In addition to the ones for the images which it is actually possible to send, there are responses corresponding to the four unsaveable photos (see the Gallery section, above), the comments for three of which (all except the photo of the Tonio concert) specify that they are placeholders. The response for the Tonio concert photo is identical to the responses for sending either the photo of Sam's dad or the photo of the man in the museum, though the other three are unique and completely unused.

Be You Forum#

Cell N151 in the 'forum_posts' CSV (three columns to the right of the nominal rightmost column) contains text; specifically a slightly different version of the text in cell F135, which is the Portuguese translation for a post by TessyStar in the 'Coming out' topic (T06).

F135 (used)

The differences in F135 when compared with N151 are:

  • The text was split into three paragraphs (and two blank lines were added after the third paragraph).
  • The full stop which occurred at the end of the bold text was moved outside the closing quotation mark and </b> tag, and the space which had been present after it was removed.
  • Four spaces were added, none of which were actually necessary (one immediately after the opening <b> tag, one between the words dão and conta in the second sentence of the second paragraph, one between the words maquiagem and para, and one after the full stop at the end of the third paragraph).

Interface#

The 'interface' CSV contains several unused pieces of text, some left over from the prototype.

Splash Screen#

The game's splash/title screen shows the game's logo (a texture) rather than displaying the title as text. The screen also says either "Tap to start" or "Press any key to start", depending on the player's system, rather than "Play".

Language Names#

The names of the languages in the 'Language' sub-menu always appear in their own languages, untranslated. However, each language name has a full set of translations in the 'interface' CSV. For the purposes of compactness, these have all been placed in a single table below; additionally, language-fr has the comment "Nom de la langue FR dans les paramètres de langue" ("Name of the FR language in language settings"), whereas the other five do not have comments. The cells with grey backgrounds are the translations which are used in-game.
