To do:

  • Regional differences:
    • General differences
    • Between English, French, and Spanish localizations
  • There's probably more

In Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, we learn that friendship comes at the cost of vigor, microtransactions, and LOTS of Gem Apples.

This game is a free-to-play, expanded version of the Team Kirby Clash sub-game from Kirby: Planet Robobot. It later got a sequel in 2019 for the Nintendo Switch, titled Super Kirby Clash.

Unused Debugging Features#

This game has a few debugging features found inside a couple Mint archives, located at RomFS\mint.

DebugFreeMove#

Like in past games, starting with Kirby: Triple Deluxe, HAL Laboratory developers accidentally left in a debug feature called "DebugFreeMove" within the Mint archive for Kirby's common actions, called MelonStepHeroCommon.bin.cmp, under Scn.MelonStep.Hero.Common. It has the animation script "AnimScriptDebugFreeMove" and the state script "StateDebugFreeMove". When forced to load via another state's "ChangeState" function, it lets the player toggle a noclip feature, allowing Kirby to ignore the collision of the battle arena he's currently in while being invulnerable. Like games before it, debugging messages set by the developers appear within its "void ProcAnim()" function, displaying some additional controls that would've shown up on the game's debugging console during development. These messages, of course, cannot appear in a regular Nintendo 3DS.

Message (Japanese)

Translation

"自由移動中 ('SELECT+A'で解除, 'R'で高速移動) "

"Free Movement (Press 'SELECT+A' to cancel, 'R' for fast movement)"

"地形判定[有効] ('L'で切り替え)"

"Collision Detection [Enabled] (Switch with 'L')"

"地形判定[無効] ('L'で切り替え)"

"Collision Detection [Disabled] (Switch with 'L')"

Unlike past games, these controls are fully functional within the game, demonstrated in the gif above. Kirby can move quickly when pressing the R button and toggle terrain collision with the L button. Similarly to Kirby: Planet Robobot's version of the move, Kirby does not flash while in this state.

DebugFriendMeteorStart#

A debug version of the starting animation that Kirby performs upon all the Friend Tablets being picked up, consisting of the animation script "AnimScriptDebugFriendMeteorStart" and the state "StateDebugFriendMeteorStart". It makes the Kirbys teleport to a certain position in the stage depending on their player number. Otherwise, it presents no real differences compared to the used version. Unused Music#

Music is contained in RomFS\snd\stream.

fanf_bonus_seiko1.dspadpcm#

The track "Well Done!" from Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Previously used in Team Kirby Clash when leveling up. This game uses a completely new jingle for that event, however.

Unused Scene Data#

The FDG archive, which is located in RomFS/fdg/Archive.bin.cmp, has some asset preload data that references a nonexistent Mint archive for debugging.

Internal Project Name#

The game's codename is "Lime", according to the sound archive, continuing the trend of Kirby games being codenamed after food.

Internal Oddities#

  • The track "Shrine of Passwords" is internally named BGM_LP_LMKbyWURANAI1.dspadpcm.bcstm. The presence of the "KbyW" prefix also used for various unused music tracks in the files of Kirby's Return to Dream Land suggests a either a possible relation to one of the three cancelled Kirby games or a possible origin during Return to Dream Land's development. This filename carries over into Super Kirby Clash.
