To do:

  • Other regional differences
  • Differences between American kiosk demo and released game (if any)

Kirby: Canvas Curse is an innovative touch-based Kirby game where he becomes a rolling helpless ball you have to guide, taking inspiration from Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble.

Unused Maps#

Three test maps for the Block Attack boss minigame engine are present under the folder bank08bin and can be accessed via Action Replay code 220F29B0 00000003 (EU only) or by swapping files. They have an odd time limit of 60 minutes.

The first two maps are especially wide compared to most normal maps from this mode, with various enemies and special blocks in very high quantities hinting at the testing purpose of the map. The third map is a duplicate of a used map.

Unused Audio#

Instrument 100#

The sound bank for "Tiny Town" (BANK_NIJI_BGM8) contains a strange-sounding instrument. This instrument is numbered 100, which is much higher than the second highest number instrument in the game: 42.

I thought it would be called "Hoshi no Kirby: Touch & Go!" in Japanese

There are minor aesthetic differences, such as the title screen graphics.

  • Several text, such as the level names, had just the first letter of the words capitalized in the Japanese version. The international versions changed these text to having the words in all caps.
  • Distances are measured in centimeters in the Japanese and European versions and inches in the American version.
  • The color of the stylus was changed from pink in the Japanese version to grey in the international versions.

Game's Opening#

Due to the game being called Kirby: Power Paintbrush in European languages, the Magical Paintbrush is named differently to match the game title.

  • It should be noted that while Australia usually received name changes to match the PAL release, it was still called "Canvas Curse" on its initial release. This was later changed with digital releases on the Wii U, where it was changed to the European title.

Internal Project Name#

Many folders and sequences in the sound archive .sdat for Kirby: Canvas Curse consistently refer to the game as "NIJI". Many music tracks are named SEQ_NIJI#.sseq, and its only sound effect sequence archive is called SEQ_NIJI_SE. "NIJI" refers to "虹", the Japanese word for "rainbow", which is thematically very fitting.
