To do:

  • The game has A LOT of leftovers from Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams and some leftovers from Rogue Stormers. This include audio files, models, textures and sprites.
  • Investigate the .gfx files - these can be opened with ffdec.
  • Document additional differences between the PC and PS4 versions.

Exactly 21 years after Bubsy 3D, Bubsy the Bobcat makes his long-awaited(?) return in The Woolies Strike Back! What could pawsibly go wrong?

...Don’t answer that.

Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams Leftovers#

Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back was developed by the same developer - and uses same game engine - as Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, and a lot of its graphics were brought over to Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back (including some that weren't even used). There are also some leftover graphics from Rogue Stormers (also made by the same developer) present in the files.

Leftover Graphics#

ESRB rating, bitComposer, and Havok screens#

The sprites for the ESRB rating, bitComposer, and Havok logos (esrb.dds, bitcomposer.dds, and havok.dds, respectively) were left in Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back's files.

Title Screen Logos#

The title screen logos from Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams (gstdlogo.dds and gstdlogooutline.png.dds, respectively) are present in Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back's files. These are obviously unused.

dummy_texture_invisible.dds#

giana_nodeath.dds#

Another leftover graphic that was partially used in Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams. And just like the aformentioned game, there is also a duplicate file present called hud_i6b.dds in Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back.

Grass Platform, Reeds, and Mushroom#

Three leftover sprites stored in a file called assetlibrary.gfx made it into the game. There are also four individual files as well: interpiece.dds, interpiece.png.dds (which is a duplicate of interpiece.dds), interpiece_decoration1.png.dds, and interpiece_decoration2.png.dds.

The early logo for Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams (project_giana_gamelogo.dds), which was a leftover from its demo (Project Giana), also made it into Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back as a leftover. A leftover-leftover, if you will.

Gems#

The leftover unused gem textures from Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams' demo, Project Giana, were left in the files (gem_red_punk_c.dds, gem_red_cute_c.dds, gem_yellow_cute_c.dds, gem_yellow_punk_c.dds, and gem_light_c.dds, respectively), as well as a blue gem texture. And that's not all...

Surprise, surprise! The gems that were used in Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams ended up as leftovers (gs_tex_gem.dds)!

Heart Gem#

The heart gem was unused in Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams. Still unused in Bubsy: The Woolies Strike Back (gem_heart_c.dds).

Leftover Models#

In pre-release content related to Twisted Dreams (another Black Forest-developed title), it was mentioned that the game would include a bee enemy that rises upwards. This enemy did not make it into the final game, but did eventually show up in another game using the same engine, The Woolies Strike Back, where it had a different behavior, being a directly hostile enemy that is distracted by flowers.

Unused Cutscenes#

Accolade Logo with Whisper#

BTWSB_Accolade_ver4_with_voice.mp4

Game.pak contains an unused version of the Accolade logo with a voice whispering Accolade's name at the end of it. The one that was used in the final game doesn't have the whisper. Additionally, the jingle in the unused version is higher-pitched than the one in the used version.

The PS4 version contains an unused version of the Black Forest Games logo inside the Game.pak file. The unused version shows the Havok logo at the end, while the one used in both the PC and PS4 versions doesn't have the Havok logo.

Text Files#

"Empty"#

There are multiple files called "empty.txt". Some of them are literally empty, while others have text that contains the following:

VI scripts will silently fail if this directory doesn't exist.
Perforce doesn't like empty directories.
Kludge file to solve both.

Easter Eggs#

Level Codes#

At the end of each level, a code to unlock the next level is printed out. Notably, two of these codes are "MARIO" and "SONIC", which are revealed at the end of Levels 6 and 7 respectively.

Demon Woolies#

There exists a bizarre occurrence where, when pausing on certain stages, Woolies will transform into the demon enemy from Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, and then turn back when unpaused.

Version Differences#

  • The sprite/texture files in the PC version are DDS files, while the sprite/texture files in the PS4 version are GNF files (GNF is a PlayStation image format).
  • The PS4 version has an empty folder called Toolset, which isn't present in the PC version.
  • The company logo video files in the PC version are WMV files, while the two files are OGG files in the PS4 version.
