Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue is the third compilation of Kingdom Hearts titles, containing Kingdom Hearts HD: Dream Drop Distance, Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage- (which serves as a preview for the then-upcoming Kingdom Hearts III), and a cutscene movie known as Kingdom Hearts χ Back Cover.

This was notably the first Kingdom Hearts title to be released on the PlayStation 4, as well as the first to utilize Unreal Engine 4.

Kingdom Hearts III Leftovers#

The "game_data/flags/Tres" folder in 0.2's pak file contains text files of the various gameplay-related flags for Kingdom Hearts III.

0.2 Internal Name#

The internal project name for the Kingdom Hearts 0.2 Birth by Sleep -A fragmentary passage- part of the collection is "Rebellis", according to files located in the pak file's "game_data/flags" folder.

Platform Differences#

  • As with the rest of the games in the series barring Melody of Memory, the Nintendo Switch version is streamed via the cloud rather than being a native port.
  • Each game runs at different resolutions depending on the platform, and in 0.2's case, frame rates. The PC version allows the user to use any resolution/frame rate in the game's settings, as well as having options for 30fps, 90fps, 120fps, and unlocked frame rates.
    • Dream Drop Distance outputs at 1080p on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and 4K on PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X.
    • 0.2 runs at 30fps on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and targets 60fps on PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X.
    • 0.2 also renders at 1080p on PlayStation 4 (as well as its Pro model) and Xbox One X, and 720p on Xbox One.
    • Playing the game on a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S respectively use the same resolution/frame rate as the PlayStation 4, Xbox One X, and Xbox One.
  • The specific version of Unreal Engine 4 used in the PS4 version is 4.12. It was upgraded to 4.17 starting with the PC version.
  • The PC version, like the other PC ports of the games in the series, adds options for three different button prompt types: Xbox, PlayStation, and generic. This causes them to have different icons in Dream Drop Distance, where they are fully colored rather than being grayscale.
    • Also, as with the PC port of Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5+2.5 ReMIX, tutorial images in Dream Drop Distance always show the Xbox button prompts regardless of which is selected. This does not affect 0.2.
  • Starting with the Xbox One version, the Disney Interactive Studios logo would be changed to a standard Disney logo. The Unreal Engine 4 logo used in 0.2 and Back Cover would also be changed from a CGI render to a 2D digital graphic, removing the "4" as well.
    • The Nintendo Switch and Steam versions would also change the Unreal Engine logo to the 2021 version, where the U symbol was redrawn and the text made larger.
  • Many textures in Dream Drop Distance were AI-upscaled in the Steam release. These would be backported to the Epic Games release shortly afterwards.
