Kingdom Hearts Re:coded

Kingdom Hearts Re:coded brings the Kingdom Hearts series back to the DS, and it's a remake of the mobile phone game Kingdom Hearts coded. In the first game in the series to take place after Kingdom Hearts II, Jiminy Cricket finds a mysterious message in his journal, so Mickey sends a virtual recreation of Sora to investigate, by eliminating bugs in the journal that are depicted as blocks.

Like Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, the game was remade as a movie that was included in Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX.

Unused Graphics#

Portraits#

The game was originally to have fully 3D cutscenes in the style of those in 358/2 Days, and portraits intended for them can be found in the game's data. Seemingly, development of cutscenes in this style didn't get too far, as these portraits are only for the characters from Destiny Islands. The final game uses full-body portraits with 2D backgrounds.

358/2 Days Leftover HUD Portraits#

The NPCTest folder contains leftover graphics of the HUD portraits from 358/2 Days, along with a early version of hooded Roxas from mission 93.

Third Save File#

Originally, the game was to have three save slots, but the final version cut it down to two for unknown reasons.

Placeholder Avatar Menu#

A placeholder graphic for the Avatar Menu can be found inside the wxc folder. The text translates to "Avatar Parts".

Placeholder Command Icon#

A small white icon with unintelligible kanji can be found in the cmn folder. This may have been a placeholder icon for commands.

Placeholder Clock Gauge#

Found among the files for Sora's HUD is a placeholder graphic for the Clock Gauge.

Hollow Bastion: Rising Falls Mini-Map#

Despite only being seen in a small cutscene, there's map data for Rising Falls in Hollow Bastion. It's possible that the area was meant to be accessible during gameplay.

Dummy Numbers#

Dummy.z contains leftover numbers from 358/2 Days. These may have been used for testing purposes.

Unused Models#

Unknown Character#

An unknown character, internally referred as pc_000.nsbmd, who does not fit the art style of the game. It's possible that this is a placeholder character for testing.

Disney Castle: Armor Donald#

An unused model of Donald in his outfit that he wears in Disney Castle. While Donald does appear in-game during the Hollow Bastion segment, he's wearing his traditional outfit instead.

Disney Castle: Armor Goofy#

Like with Donald, Goofy also has an unused model of him in his Disney Castle outfit, which ultimately goes unused.

Hollow Bastion: Rising Falls#

A nearly complete model of Hollow Bastion's Rising Falls, despite only the top part ever being seen in-game.

Unused Music#

Treasured Memories#

Namine.sseq contains an arranged version of the music track, "Treasured Memories". It goes unused in favor of the version from the original Kingdom Hearts, used for a pre-rendered cutscene.

The DB folder contains the names for every map in the game, along with ones that are never seen in-game. It's possible these maps were used for debugging purposes, as they were placed at the end of the list for each world.

Oddities#

Battle of the One Thousand Heartless Scene#

During the opening movie, various scenes from previous games are shown, and one of those scenes, the battle against one thousand Heartless, is taken from an early version, showing two Behemoths and several Wyverns. This was later fixed in the remastered movie in HD 2.5 ReMIX.
