Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (pronounced Three-Five-Eight Days Over Two) is the fourth game in the series and the first one for the DS. It covers the misadventures of Roxas, running parallel from the end of Kingdom Hearts up to the beginning of Kingdom Hearts II. Much of the gameplay revolves around missions, which can be played solo or up to four players, and can involve all members of Organization XIII and even secret characters like Mickey and Sora.

It was later remade into a movie that was included in Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX.

Unused Graphics#

Unused Portraits#

There's a large amount of portraits that go unused, ranging from a scrapped world based off the Pinocchio to planned character appearances being scrapped.

Early HUD Portraits#

The UI folder contains early HUD portraits of Roxas (both regular and hooded), Axel, Xion, and Marluxia. The most notable difference is that Xion's hair uses a dark shade of blue instead of pure black, along with Marluxia's hair being a darker shade of pink, as seen in the original Chain of Memories.

Mission Mode HUD Placeholder#

Four placeholder icons for the mission mode can also be found in the UI folder. The text translates to "Xemnas".

Early Midnight Roar#

An early version of the Midnight Roar Keyblade exists in the UI folder, originally sporting a lighter shade of grey. The final version instead uses a darker shade of grey, while making the handle orange.

Early Twilight#

There's also an early version of the Twilight claymore, originally using pink and purple colors before going with light green and yellow.

Unused Abilities#

Stop Magic#

Watch on YouTube

The stop magic from Kingdom Hearts was meant to be included, but went unused in this game. It can be re-enabled by modifying the game's data, but enemies are not affected when it is used.

Unused Models#

Crooked Chariot#

A model of a four-legged heartless with wings, internally named "Crooked Chariot", can be found alongside models for other enemies. Its design suggests that it would've been encountered in Olympus Coliseum.

Unused Animations#

Crooked Chariot#

Crooked Chariot has various animations despite never being seen in-game. Such as walking, running, attacking, getting hurt, and even falling down when defeated.

Unused Missions#

The game has two unused missions: one made for testing purposes and another mission that may have been discarded near the end of the game's development. Both missions can be played via file-swapping.

Test Mission#

This mission is located at data/mi/mi/9005. It takes place in Twilight Town and its accessible zones are the Station Plaza (where you spawn), the Underground Concourse (where there's a chest) and the Side Street (there's nothing there). Its completion requires defeating all the enemies.

It contains several heartless, a dummy timer (does nothing when reaching 0), interactive objects and destroyable objects from various worlds, and triggers that show several basic tutorials (melee attack, save, etc).

There are two visual elements that differ from their counterparts found in playable missions: there's no mission objective at the mission info screen and the zone barriers aren't used or visible even when the collisions themselves are in place.

Discarded Mission#

This mission is located at data/mi/mi/1052.It takes place at Beast's Castle, and its accessible zones are the Undercroft and the Secret Passage. Its completion required destroying the shadow globs and the enemies spawned are shadow globs, shadows and neoshadows.

One thing to take into account is the mission objective info being "DELETED".

The mission seems perfectly functional and complete, so it was probably discarded for non-technical reasons.

Pinocchio's World#

Pinocchio's World

The world IDs also contain one that was supposed to be based off Pinocchio, but was scrapped for unknown reasons. It's also possible that the name was a placeholder for something else that was never implemented into the final game.

Pinocchio's World Maps#

Town
Pleasure Island

There are also references to maps for the scrapped Pinocchio world, suggesting that some initial development occurred before being scrapped. Pleasure Island would later appear in Dream Drop Distance, where it was called "Prankster's Paradise". "Town" would have also referred to Collodi, which was set to appear in Missing-Link, though that game was later cancelled.

Anti-Piracy#

This game utilizes the DS Protect anti-piracy library to ensure that it is not being run off a flashcart or emulator. If any of the DS Protect checks fail, the game crashes before or after cutscenes, which will occur as early as after making a new save file.

The original Japanese Revision 0 version of the game uses DSProtect 1.08. The later Japanese revision, alongside international versions use DSProtect 1.10.

Regional Differences#

A few things were changed for the international versions:

  • The difficulty was toned down. Enemies have less HP, Munny is now awarded for completing missions, and some enemies deal less damage.
  • The player is awarded Mission Crowns for completing missions in either Solo or Multiplayer Mission Mode. In the Japanese version, it is only possible to earn Mission Crowns by playing Multiplayer Mission Mode.
  • The Japanese version of the opening movie lists each Organization member's attribute and weapon type, along with a short paragraph describing them, which includes their title; the international versions instead mentions their attributes within the paragraph and their weapon types, with no mention of title. As a result, Xemnas's title lacked an official translation until the 358/2 Days movie in HD 1.5 ReMIX.
