Splatoon 2, the Nintendo's Switch sequel to the hugely popular Splatoon, freshens up the series on a new system with a new hub, new characters, new weapons, new stages, a new story mode, and the series' first DLC campaign.

Semi-infamously, this game hides a massive underbelly of unused content that could rival the likes of games such as Super Mario Sunshine and Bully.

Octo Expansion Version Note#

現状使ってないが、もしリソースのバージョンが上がり、かつ、見分けることが必要なら使う

Present in OctaResVersion_Octa.xml. This translates to:

Not used at the moment, but will be if the resource version goes up and we need to be able to tell the difference

Inaccessible Usable Code#

To do:
There's a lot of this stuff, maybe move this to a debug or unused code page.

Beyond the debug menu, there's more code in the game executable impossible to normally access that still gets referenced.

Debug Draws#

Note the LP drawing functions are dummied in the retail release which have to be restored before displaying the non AGL ones.

Lp::Sys::TimeStamp::entryDraw: Draws build information on the game screen. Note Code and Content are -1, most likely since the retail build doesn't define them.
 %d %s (Code)
 %d %s (Content)
 %s (Executable build type)
 %s (RomType)
 %s (RegionLang)
AGL: Draws a bounding box and information about the game rendering.
 Master Width:%d Height:%d
 Scale X:%.2f Y:%.2f
 Valid Width:%.2f Height:%.2f
 Color:%s (Linear/sRGB)
Game::CamouflageMgr::debugPrint_: Draws debug information ingame.
 CalcResult %d Draw %d
 [Player%d] remain checker num %d [peak %d]

E3 Show Floor Sequence#

To do:
More info.

Setting the RomType to ShowFloor (or 6) makes the game use an alternative sequence. While similar to the TestFire/World Premiere, this sequence allows pressing ZL + R + D-Pad Down on the title screen to display a small menu to customize the game, interestingly it's the only case of the engine's debug text writer being used on retail builds, most likely for organizers able to actually see it. This was later removed from the executable, likely past 3.1.0.

Regional Differences#

Japan-Exclusive Gear#

Two runs of gear were made available from the Japanese comic Corocoro Magazine, where the codes will only work with the Japanese version of the game, nor cannot be ordered via Murch therefore making it unobtainable in other-region versions. The localized names don't go unused due to them being seen during online battles.

  • The Eminence Cuff, Milky Eminence Jacket, and Milky Enperrials were made available in November 2017, based off the outfit Emperor worn in the Splatoon manga.
  • The Spy Gear, consisting of the Sennyu Suit, Sennyu Inksoles, Sennyu Goggles, Sennyu Headphones, Sennyu Specs were available in the August 2018 issue of Corocoro, based off the outfits the manga protagonists worn in the manga.

Internal Project Name#

Splatoon 2's internal project name is Blitz, based on strings in the executable.

Octo Expansion's internal name is Octa, which may be in reference to the prominence of Octolings in the DLC's story and the addition of playable Octolings.
