Code Name: Viper is a shameless (but still okay) Rolling Thunder clone by Capcom. Notable for having a playable character (Kenny Smith) who has been considered to look like he's pantless, due to the fact that he has pants that have the same color as his skin.
Fun Fact: This game was co-developed by Arc System Works, who also developed the actual NES port of Rolling Thunder prior to this game. Go figure.
Unused Graphics#
An unused "OK" word balloon. Unlike the ones that are used, its graphics are not stored in reverse.
There are three different types of hands drawn for the level complete screen. The first two levels have a picture with crossed fingers, and the next three with a hand open and stretched out and the last one has an angry fist. There is an unused fourth type of hand still present in the CHR data as well as sprite layout in the PRG ROM.
Also, the first two hands were meant to be animated. The CHR data for one extra frame still exist in the ROM. However, there are no sprite layouts corresponding to it, as well as no any animation code has ever written to it. Here are two pictures of how they look.
Among the hands sprite graphics, there's an unused sprite of the uniform cap. No sprite layouts for it is left in the final version, not when it should be displayed.
The map sprites has an additional animation for a landing helicopter, unused in the final game, as well as some unknown odd sprite to the left.
The tilemap resource for some early unused version of the intro briefing is still present in the ROM. In the final version, they used the text message instead. It seems on the early stages, the intro sequence should've been completely different, similar to other screens like map or level complete briefing.
