What do you get when you cross the action-oriented gameplay of Shinobi with the dopey likeness of Alex Kidd? A surprisingly great platformer, that's what.

Early Boss Names#
Early boss names can be found buried in the ROM at the following addresses (strings are offset, with "A" being equal to $13). These seem to be directly from early versions of the stage intro screens.

Unused Graphics#
Poking the RAM address at $004D with the value $04 upon pressing Start on the title screen will force the game to start on Round 5, which doesn't actually exist in the game. However, on the map screen an unused text graphic will display on the top of the screen reading "Round 5".
Alternatively, the Pro Action Replay code 00C04D:04 results in the same effect.
If you view the tiles in a VDP viewer while on the map screen you can see unused graphics for a marker for Round 5 as well as an incomplete graphic for the marker of Round 6.
Also in the VDP viewer is the life icon graphic for Shinobi Kidd. You can write the value of $00 to ROM addresses $158D, $158E, and $158F to re-enable this graphic in the game.

Early Stage Intro Screens#
The following ROM addresses can be changed to gain access to early versions of the stage intro screens.
width | Screen |
Instructions For Access |
|---|---|
To view the early portrait graphics, change the value at ROM address $70D2 to $C3. To display the name "MARI-OH", change the value at ROM address $1793 to $00. |
|
To display the name "HELLI", change the value at ROM address $15CC to $00. |
|
To restore Suppon's portrait graphics, change the 2 byte value at ROM address $1802 to $6CAA. To restore Suppon's palette, change the 2 byte value at ROM address $17FA to $4080. |
Editing any of these values in ROM will affect the checksum and will make it so that the game cannot boot past the Master System's BIOS screen. You can get around this on emulators by disabling the BIOS on boot-up.

Unused Music#
The RAM address at $1E05 can be poked with the following values at any point in the game to play unused music.
Sound ID |
Music |
Notes |
|---|---|---|
$89 |
A strange, dramatic-sounding track. |
|
$8B |
A shortened version of the death jingle. |
|
$8C |
A traditional Japanese-sounding jingle. |
Unused Audio Sample Support#
There is stub data for removed samples still in the game. Poking $B7 to RAM address $DE03 will attempt to play one of these samples complete with a start address, length, and sample rate. However, since the sample data itself has been removed, you won't actually be able to hear it.
