EGM Issue 9 (April 1990)#

Originally the game was named "Shinobi Kidd", though the game starred a different black-haired protagonist and seems to have had no actual connection to Alex Kidd.

Some kind of meter can be seen next to the life bar, unseen in the final game.

Perhaps even more notable is the design for the stage 1 boss, Kabuto. Named "Mari-Oh", he is unmistakably similar to Nintendo's moustachioed plumber. The first screenshot seems to be flipped, judging by the background and lifebar placement. Mari-Oh does not seem to have a visible lifebar.

Although his name and design were changed for the final release, Kabuto still has elements from his Mario-referencing origins present in the fight, throwing bouncing fireballs and shrinking to a smaller form after taking damage.
