Mad Dog McCree is the LaserDisc light gun game that spawned a cottage industry in the mid-90s while still being marketed to this day in one form or another.
Unused Footage#
At the start of the laserdisc, immediately following the scene introducing the Mayor's daughter (as used in the attract mode) a complete copy of the target practice game of shooting bottles off a fence is present, albeit without the prospector's comments. This may be an early test setup, as it is referred to in the Level Select screen also present on disc.
|
For the first phase of the game (before you attempt to go to the hideout) each completed scene is darkened on the menu screen. Combinations exist on the disc for every possible completion order, including one that shows all stages complete. However, when this occurs the game automatically moves to the signposts so this is never shown.
Unused Level Select#
After the used target practice video, two menu screens are present on disc, but unused. These appear to be for early testing, as they provide access to all of the initial scenes of the game.

Revisional Differences#
With all the game video being streamed off a LaserDisc (with limited Amiga overlays), the potential for differences between code releases is minimal.

However, at some point during the game's arcade sales, several changes were made to the attract mode to correct some errors:
- On the initial screen, "your" was corrected to "you're".
- As the gun holster had no switch in production games, with reloading actually triggered by a mercury switch in the gun housing, the info was revised.
- The background images were updated to include the orange "toy" gun housing that had been made for some markets squeamish over a realistic-looking six-shooter.
