'...But what does it mean?' |
|
|
This page covers the European release of the game using the engine from Inazuma Eleven 2, not the original Japanese release. |
Inazuma Eleven leaves Japan after a few years, where it was localized exclusively in Europe compared to other Level-5 titles at the time with a British English dub. It's notable for being remade using the engine of the second game, thus having a lot of leftover content from there.
Debug Mode#
In the EVENTINFO.TXT file the script ID 90000000 can be found for the debug mode. Replacing the value of RPG_SCRIPT_NO in the INAZUMA.INI with this value, loads the debug mode of the game. The debug menu itself is not translated and only in Japanese.
The debug mode loads the Sports Club map, with access to all locations. No map has any NPCs except a few to activate debug features, additionally loot chests are still available. The player starts with the members Mark, Nathan, Sam, Jack, Jim, Tod, Steve, Timmy, Maxwell, Axel and Kevin at recruited. All of the characters are on level 1 except Mark who is on level 5. Furthermore, the current task shows いざマスターアツブへ (Let's go to Master Atsubu).
Sports Club#
This is the map the player gets loaded into. Several NPCs are standing in a line in the middle of the map, each character having an own debug options.
Cat
When talking to the cat a dialog pops up with the question アイテムいるかい? (Do you want an item?) and the options Yes and No. Pressing Yes gives the player one of every item that exists in the game.
Chicken
When interacting with the chicken a couple of dialogs open, all of them looking like
「ほい」→ 1
「いいえ」→ フリーに?る
Pressing Yes on one of these options loads the mentioned chapter in the normal game, No opens the dialog for the next chapter.
Dog
Talking to the dog opens a dialog with a boy called Mountford who asks the player the question:
イべントビューワー
「はい」⇒?み?み
「いいえ」⇒?り?え
Pressing Yes fades out the screen for a moment and then adds the character Willy to the party.
Rabbit
The rabbit opens a dialog with the character Byers, the text contains several questionmarks making the text unreadable. This dialog allows to start matches against important opponent teams.
1st Guy
This character is Eisner, the counterpart of the rabbit. The dialogs are unreadable as well and it has the same function, just covering unimportant teams.
2nd Guy
This guy is called Dient and allows to start special battle modes, which are not covered by the other two NPCs before.
3rd Guy
When talking to this NPC the Presige Points and Friendship Points are set to 999999.
4th Guy
This NPC unlocks all blog entries when talking to, the dialog that opens is ブログ??? (Blog???).
Blue Shining
To the left of the Football Club a blue shining can be seen. While the textbox is pretty broken, it can still be interacted with. Pressing Yes on the dialog loads the player to the end of the game, just before the 2nd half of the battle against Zeus.
Baseball Field#
The same characters which are loaded in the Sports Club map can be found here. They are partially placed within objects and interacting with them has no effect and does not open a dialog, they only change their angle to face the player's character.
Club Houses#
By talking to the cat and obtaining all items, the keys of the clubhouses can be obtained to be able to enter them. Weirdly, even though normally all NPCs are removed from the maps, the character Miles can be found in the Athletics Club and the character Jeeling can be found in the Tennis club. Both can be recruited as team members.

Debug Files#
The game contains several files used for debugging the game including files which list backgrounds, script locations and settings that can be edited.

DEBUG_SCRIPT_LIST.TXT#
A list of several scripts used as checkpoints in the game, the list is splitted by chapters. Setting the value of RPG_SCRIPT_NO of the INAZUMA.INI allows to load that specific checkpoint. Interestingly, the list has a header for chapter 11, but no values for it.

Unused Inazuma 2 Techniques#
In fact, all of the techniques from Inazuma Eleven 2 are available and functional in this game: they are even fully translated in the different languages! You have to use the following Action Replay code to get them, though, since you don't at any point in the story get the associated needed scrolls for them.

Leftover Layton Team#
In the Japanese Inazuma Eleven 1, at the Training Center, you can sometimes meet the Layton team, compromised of some characters of the famous Level-5 series, which would challenge you in their usual wears rather than the special football uniforms, but you would not be able to recruit them.
Their 3D model data is left unused in Inazuma 2 JP and Inazuma 1 EU, and even partially corrupted. Some fan-translation patches for the second game restore them as playable characters, but wearing football uniforms.
Early Localized Names#
European versions of Inazuma Eleven 1 and Inazuma Eleven 2 share most of their files, which includes a file named SCRIPTINFO.TXT (shown later on this very page), which associates the different special techniques in the game to their associated in-game cutscenes. In the European version, it was partially translated to English: all techniques which appear in Inazuma Eleven 1 were localized, while all techniques which debuted in Inazuma Eleven 2 were left untranslated. It would seem like the localization team abandoned the idea of using SCRIPTINFO.TXT as a way to localize names in the game, as SCRIPTINFO.TXT contains localized names that differ from those used in the actual game. Interestingly, a lot of them are for techniques which ended up keeping their (Engrish) original name.
Here is a list of them with the final English name for reference:

Also present in unitbase.dat (which contains data for all characters in the game such as stats and names) are early localized names for characters who debuted in Inazuma Eleven 2. They can be seen by transferring players recruited in a copy of either Inazuma Eleven 2 games into a copy of European Inazuma Eleven 1, as both share the same player structure. Some of them are fairly obviously temporary (with the character's first name being an initial instead), while some of them are much closer to their original Japanese names in meaning and/or sounds. This is most clearly the case with Manyuuji/Cloister Divinity players who, for the most part, had different localized names early on.

Unused Dialog#
There are several NPCs in the game which you normally can't talk to because objects and walls are blocking you to reach them, one example being the girl in the girl changing room. Instead of these NPCs having no dialog at all, they open a dialog with the text (Doesn't talk).
Early Map Design#
Inside the game when switching a major location a map appears in which the player can select their next destination which highlights the location. The more locations are unlocked, the more location names appear on the map. The way it works is that there is a background image on the screen while unlocked location gets added as animated files with the name and get placed on top of the location on the background image. However, comparing the files with the location names with the background image shows that the files were taken from a different time during development since they show slight differences.
- The Inazuma Station was completely changed by changing the buildings standing there
- The Tower was slightly changed by changing the height of the tower, can not be seen ingame since the tower is always available
- The Raimon Jr. High was slightly recolored, can not be seen ingame since the location is always available
