Gyakuten Kenji 2 is the much-anticipated sequel to Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth. In this game, there is an anti-corruption campaign involving Miles which leads to him uncovering the mystery behind the case investigated by his father and his assistant, which cost Manfred von Karma his only penalty ever. It comes complete with a new Logic Chess mechanism, and better crafted cases overall.
Unfortunately, Capcom USA decided that based on poor sales of the first game, they would not be localizing the sequel, leaving a joint fan-translation effort to step in. However, the sequel would finally see an official worldwide release in 2024 as part of a remastered package alongside its predecessor.
Unused Graphics#
These are placeholder graphics for character mugshots, with the kanji for "temporary" present in the background.
This is obviously a leftover from the first case of the first Edgeworth game: background graphics used for testimony segments set... in Edgeworth's office, at night. None of the cases from the second game use this setting.

Note: Despite no English version being released, for consistency with previous games, the English names will be used whenever available.
Unused Logic Text#
This text is stored with the "Logic Success" dialogues for Case 1, without corresponding Logic matches. It is contained in the script files 0339.bin and 0345.bin.
It is an early unused script for the first Logic connection Edgeworth would make. However, in the final game, the used first Logic connection is extremely vital to the case, and the rain has no relevance to the investigation, unlike in this unused text. This change was probably to make the case more streamlined.

These are texts for two unused Logic bubbles, which refers to the security monitors you see in the President's plane. It seems they would be matched to get the conclusion that one of the monitors is missing/broken. It doesn't have a matching "Logic Success" text. In the final game, Edgeworth deduces this by himself in the main script in about two lines.

Unused NPC Script#
Winston Payne makes a brief cameo during the first case's second investigation phase. However, there are a bunch of lines which are not used in-game and hint to his possibly playing a bigger role.

Save Data Version Info#
Like previous entries, there is some version info that is used in the save data. It is unknown if the version info is for the save format or the game. Unlike the previous games, this string does not include the build date.

Anti-Piracy Check#
This game utilizes the DS Protect anti-piracy library to ensure that it is not being run off a flashcart or emulator. If any of the DS Protect checks fail, all dialogue text will use the Borginian "language" font from Apollo Justice, making all the dialogues in the game unreadable, as the characters are swapped randomly.
While the game can still be played from start to finish, playing a visual novel without the "novel" part isn't really intended for the genre. Various button labels, character names, and evidence you collect have their text values intact, but the Organizer descriptions on the Touch Screen are replaced with several Xs.
Oddities#
|
|
Please elaborate. |
Folders#
Despite the game never getting an official localization, all files that would need localization, such as text to be translated, are in a separate /jpn/ folder, and the main executable has strings referencing other languages.
Extended Episode One#
The first episode has several traces of being three chapters long at some point in development. This includes entries to nonexistent files in jump tables and gaps in file numbers.
