System Settings (Nintendo 3DS)

Just your average settings app, on the Nintendo 3DS. That's about it. It also has a really good soundtrack.

This text is located in the fcram (Fast Cycle RAM), however, it is presumed these are leftover debugging symbols. Words of interest include "XBox 360", "Windows Mobile", "Playstation", and a few others mentioned there, as the 3DS has nothing to do with any of this (besides Xbox 360 and PlayStation, both of which are owned by rivaling companies). These are located in the System Settings' ExeFS (Executable Filesystem).

Debug Layout#

In every version of the app, a layout named Debug_D_00 is present, but not referred anywhere in the code, meaning it's completely unusable. In this layout, there's a table of 9 lines and 2 rows with the following text:

Translation:

'...But does it make sense?' The translations on this page need to be proofread. If you are fluent enough in this language, please make any corrections necessary!

This is confirmed to be the debug menu taking you to some parts of the app, used by the prototype.

Regional Differences#

Simple Start Mode in Wi-Fi Connection Settings#

Nintendo 3DS#

3DS

Japan	International

Just like the Nintendo DS, there is a Japan-only Simple Start mode that is accessible within the Nintendo 3DS Wi-Fi Connection settings. As Simple Start routers are not sold outside of Japan, this button was fully removed in the US/EU versions of their respective region's connection settings (unlike with the DS Connection settings).

Nintendo DS Mode#

Japan	International

Ditto to the above, but in the DS Connection settings this time. As said above, the button was not fully removed in the US/EU version of the settings, just moved out of the boundaries of the touch screen (as was the case when accessing these settings on the DS as well). By incorrectly calibrating the touch screen, you can click the off-screen button and access this setup option, however useless it may be outside of Japan.

Factory Reset#

Japanese	English	Korean	Spanish

French (Canada)	French (France)	German	Italian

Dutch	Portuguese (Brazil)	Portuguese (Portugal)	Russian

Chinese (China)	Chinese (Taiwan/Hong Kong)

While the color of the format button was changed from blue to red in version 7.0, the button remains blue in the Chinese and Taiwanese firmware. This is likely due to the color unintentionally being represented as death which is prohibited in the Chinese rating boards. The text differs in all regions.

Data Management#

Main Menu#

In Asian regions, additional text is added below the console's logo, just saying "Data management" again.

The Chinese region doesn't have DSiWare, so the corresponding button is removed.

EUR/USA	JPN/KOR/TWN	CHN

3DS Data Management#

On the Taiwan region, the data management menu didn't get updated after 4.0, meaning there are no save data backup feature, and the unused English text is the same as 4.0.

As for the Chinese region, since the eshop didn't release there, only the extradata button is present.

4.0 - 11.16 (China)	4.0 - 11.16 (Taiwan)	4.0 (International)	6.0 - 11.17 (International)

Internet Settings#

In the Taiwan and Chinese regions, the "DS Connection Settings" button is missing, the reason behind this is is unknown, they both have the DS Download play feature in the Download Play mode.

Taiwan/Chinese	Other regions

Revisional Differences#

To do: There are certainly more differences in other parts of the interface — if just text there should be a comparison table with strings ripped from the ROMFS There used to be an option to change the screen brightness settings within "Other Settings" at some point. Identify when and document. Parental Controls changed a lot in 7.2, this needs to be documented. It look like the "Nintendo WiFi USB Connectore" option got removed at some point, needs research.

In 1.x, the "Nintendo 3DS" subsection of Data Management wasn't available as a consequence of the eShop not being released yet and therefore no digital software being officially available to end-users.The eShop, along with most other online services, was introduced in the 2.0 system update, with game update packs and DLC releasing in 4.0. The "Add-On Content" button was renamed to "Downloadable Content" in 5.0. Save-Data Backups to SD card were added in 6.0, requiring another button to be added, shrinking all the other button elements on the bottom screen.

1.0	2.0	4.0	5.0

6.0 - 11.17

Firmware 7.0.0-13 introduced Nintendo Network ID support (and also Miiverse) for the JPN, USA and EUR regions, for which the System Settings application was updated to add the corresponding button (and the other four buttons and their icons were made smaller); its banner was also updated to add the NNID icon among the other four, and all were moved to be lined up below the wrench, as opposed to being on either side of it.

< 7.0.0-13 for JPN/USA/EUR, all for TWN/CHN/KOR	7.0.0-13 - 8.1.0-19 JPN/USA/EUR

Additionally, the MSET "DS Profile" exploit was fixed, which allows privilege excalation after using a DS homebrew to corrupt said configuration. While mitigated in its original form in 5.0 at the kernel level, it was adapted and briefly resurrected for 6.x firmwares since the actual exploit in System Settings had not been actually fixed until this version.
