This page is rather stubbly and could use some expansion.
Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

Face Raiders is an application for Nintendo 3DS systems that allows users to shoot their face. Like, you take a picture of your face and the game lets you shoot a bunch of clones of it. Got that? Good.

To do:
Document the Face Ace prototype builds.

Dummy Textures#

Present in the files for most models is this dummy texture named dummy8x8.

/hal/gfx/kbb/enemy/face

Present in a file named "pnote.bctex", there is a 256x256 dummy texture named Dummy256.

In a file named "unknown.bctex", there is a 128x128 dummy texture named unknown_face. This appears if you got a high score, but delete the face from your Face Collection. It is also seen if you get a game over. (so... it's not unused?)

In a file named "face.bctex", there is a 128x128 dummy texture named DummyFace128. This seemingly would be used as a dummy for the faces of various enemies rather than a photo of the user's face. This face appears on the Home Menu banner if you haven't saved any photos, as well as in the game over menu's tips.

Unused Graphics#

In the files, there exists number graphics from 1-8. However, as the Diver enemy can only take up to 5 hits, 6-8 go completely unused. Modifying the enemy's HP to 8 reveals that there is leftover code to display the higher numbers.

As with the skull, the 8 only has half of a texture, which is copied and mirrored to make the other half.

Present in the files is a photo of Samurai with a black-outlined version of the Raider seen in the Face Raiders mini-graphics seen throughout the game.

Unused Enemy Behavior#

Green Switch Raider#

There's an unused behavior for the Switch Raiders which causes them to turn green after getting hit - but then switch back to red. In this state, they become completely invulnerable.

Unused Panel Face Behaviors#

As shown in this video, there are a few unused behaviors for the Panel Faces:Watch on YouTube

Behavior 15: Spawns a Panel Face that rotates 540 degrees in 6 seconds and escapes.

Behavior 16: Spawns a Panel Face that moves up and down for 8 seconds and attempting to defeat it will cause it to break through the wall and makes flying debris.

Behavior 17: Same as above, but moves down and up instead.

Behavior 21: Spawns a Panel Face that starts small then starts to grow for 6 seconds until it leaves to the bottom of background and cannot be hit during it. Shooting it will make it smaller but cannot be defeated by any means.

Behavior 22: Spawns a big Panel Face that when shot, splits in to 4 Panel faces.

Behavior 24: Spawns a rectangle Panel Face, which unlike the used version which has 1 red Panel Face on the left, this one has 3 normal Panel Faces.

Behavior 26: Spawns a rectangle Panel Face with one red Panel Face on the center instead of left like the used version.

Behavior 27: Same as above, but instead the red Panel Face is to the right instead of the left.

Behavior 28: A vertical version of the rectangle Panel Face which has no red Panel Faces, only normal ones.

Behavior 39: Although this is used as the bottom right part of Puzzle Face, they are never seen separately and attempting to defeat it will keep them stuck forever.

Unused Golden Raiders#

A few enemies never spawn as Golden Raiders, however, modifying the game reveals them to have functional golden variants: Watch on YouTube

  • X-Spike as a Golden Raider can only be hit from the front. Attempting to shoot it from behind will cause the game to crash.
  • When a trail of Paddles are Golden Raiders, the face is rescued after only one of them is shot.
  • When a Rectangle Face is set as a Golden Raider, it will still split into three regular Panel Faces. The first one defeated will give you the rescued face.
  • When a group of Flip Faces are Golden Raiders, all you have to do is flip them all upside down to rescue the face.
