A 2010 prototype of the 3DS eShop was released on April 4, 2026, among prototypes of other 3DS system applications. The build is a mockup rather than functional, likely for the purposes of demonstrating the software internally and testing functionality before the backend was live. Watch on YouTube
Differences#
- The status bar on the top of the Top Screen has some minor changes:
- Internet icon with less shading (that appears regardless of actual connection status on the console)
- Time and date stuck at December 12 at 8:45 AM.
- Different battery icon, with a design similar to the one seen in the DSi's Home Menu.
- Most of the dummy software listings share background images from random games. Some software includes three test images, taken from Tomodachi Collection with some text on it.
- Certain places list 3DS as "CTR", its codename.
Loading Screen#
- The background of the loading screen is lighter.
- Game icons can sometimes show up instead of the shopping bags, which was removed in the final.
- The Nintendo eShop logo is replaced with blue text saying "T I G E R", which is the codename for the software.
Home Page#
Drastically different design compared to the final version.
- The news ticker is located on the Touch Screen instead of the Top Screen.
Search Page#
Search is not functional; tapping on the search bar will result in "ポケモン" (Pokémon) being set as the search term without calling for the keyboard applet, and the results are not related to the term.
- On the apps list upon searching, at the very end, there is a temporary banner featuring the shopping bag mascot with a hand.
News Page#
The News Page has a multitude of test messages, likely to test the spacing and how it would show up on screen.
- One of the news messages includes the eShop codename TIGER, as well as a mention to "3dsware".
Download#
- Before finalizing the purchase, there is an option to download eShop titles directly to the 3DS internal memory, something that was removed in the final version.
- During the download progress, there is a button to view multiple downloads at once. While a multi-download option was eventually added to the 3DS in a later update, it was done within the Home Menu and not the eShop application.
- The shopping bag mascot is blue instead of orange. There is also a different animation that plays when a software is being downloaded.
Unused Music#
