Rockman 3: Dr. Wily no Saigo!? (J2ME)

Are you a bad enough dude to rescue this article?

The NES Mega Man 3 was ported to J2ME cell phones twice: an undumped release in Japan on the DoJa platform with a dumped official port to the more worldwide-known MIDP platform released in China, and an entirely different dumped port released for J2ME MIDP phones in Europe by Glu Mobile (with an undumped North American release of it from Capcom Mobile). An undumped J2ME MIDP release for Southeast Asia under the name Rockman 3 is also known to have been published by 8elements, which may or may not have been based on the Japanese version.

This article covers the Chinese release.

Starting with the Chinese release of this game, MoJoy began the questionable practice of re-releasing previous entries in the series under the latest entry's number for certain low-end devices that presumably weren't powerful enough for the latest entry. Interestingly, similar to the more famous European version, there are three types of versions of the "actual" J2ME Rockman 3 for phones with different screen sizes, in which the medium and small versions offer similar gameplay with shrunk-down graphics. However, only the original- and medium-sized versions include the music.

MIDI Data#

The Chinese J2ME versions contain a standard MIDI file arrangement of most tracks from the NES original (as well as sound effects selectable separately in the settings with a music/SFX/sound off toggle). Each file is a type 0 MIDI, meaning the instruments are only split by channels and not tracks; however, most MIDI songs in the game have a specific name given to the singular track. Below is a table of file names, track names, and the corresponding song titles from the OST.

The track names appear to be strange internal titles. Most notable are the unique names for the Needle Man Stage and Gemini Man Stage themes, which stand out from the rest of the naming scheme. This is in parallel to staff interviews that confirmed these two songs were written by Harumi Fujita (as well as part of the Staff Roll theme that is not included in the J2ME port) as opposed to the rest of the soundtrack, which was written by the unrelated Yasuaki Fujita. In addition, the Boss track is strangely referred to as "BOSS Theme 2".
