The NES Mega Man 4 was ported to J2ME and released on the DoJa platform only in Japan, and on the MIDP platform only in China (in 2011). This port and the feature phone Mega Man 5 follow the originals far closer than the predecessors.

For the time being, this article covers the Chinese J2ME MIDP release.

Unused Graphics#

Dr. Wily Stage 4#

21.png contains an unused block new to this game, which is a dark placeholder tile with a red X on it.

Bitmap Font#

The Chinese J2ME version almost entirely uses the phone's system font to display the game's text (translated into Chinese). In spite of that, an image of the font from the NES original is present, complete with the unused letters for the "get a weapon" screen.

Alternate Title and Ending Graphics#

Used

Unused

The game contains seemingly-unused alternative versions of the title screen graphic in the style of the Mega Man logo, and the "Rockman" ending slide with the protagonist's localized name as well as the text in English. This port is not known to have received an English-language release.

Unused Music#

Full Opening Theme#

Only the first 20 seconds of this track from the original are heard normally until it's interrupted by the explosion sound.

Title#

This rendition of the theme is completely unheard as the title screen is silent. It sounds slightly discordant due to an arrangement error on the pitch bends.

Stage Clear#

This rendition of the jingle is unused, as defeating a boss incorrectly plays "Get the Items", and getting either of the items doesn't play any specific jingle.

Checks#

Debug Mode#

Adding the app property Opt-App-Mode: 1 to the game's .JAD text file will enable the debug mode.

  • Memory usage statistics will be displayed on the title screen.
  • Two debug keys will be added in-game. Press * to instantly lose a life, or 5 to enable invincibility, which will also print the text "MUTEKI" in the top-left corner.

Phone-Specific Overrides#

The ordinary 240x320 resolution version checks as to whether the MicroEdition Platform (the phone's model) is "V802SH" or "V902SH" (phone models from Sharp) and seems to change several things in its behavior based on this system property. What specifically it changes, however, is unknown.

This needs some investigation.
