The second coin-op Mega Man game where the player goes through a boss rush of enemies from previous entries. Most notably, it features the addition of Mega Man 8's Duo as a playable character, teasing his presence in that game a few months prior.

Unused Graphics#

MM2PF_PharaohMan_UnusedIdle.gif
While used, Pharaoh Man's hand on his shield pose can't be properly seen in-game due to the shield's effect covering it.

All four playable characters have an animation for shooting down. The one for Duo is actually used but is covered up by effects.

MM2PF_MegaMan_Hadouken.gif
Mega Man performing the Hadoken from the Street Fighter series. An associated graphic for the projectile doesn't seem to exist. Mega Man was likely intended to have this as part of his moveset, similar to the Shoryuken-esque Mega Upper he has in-game. Whether it would be a standard or unlockable move is unknown. Notably, a similar Hadoken move was accessible in Mega Man X, which functioned similar to its Street Fighter incarnation down to the input.

MM2PF_ProtoMan_ShieldAttack.gif
Proto Man seemingly using his shield as an attack. Was likely planned as a part of his moveset, but evidently was scrapped before the sprites were finished. The gaps between sprites are very rough and seem to be missing frames. Judging by the number of similar sprites, it's possible that the sprites were tested with the shield in slightly different positions before the attack was scrapped. In the last frame of the first row, Proto Man appears to be both attacking with and carrying his shield, oopsie!

Unused Music#

Description

Unused (Cut Man Theme Guitar)

A guitar track that's based on the melody of Cut Man's Theme. Purpose unknown, may have been a test song.

Elec Man Theme (NES Ver.)

A recording of Elec Man's Theme from the first Mega Man game. Has been edited to have a shorter loop. Purpose unknown, may have been a test song.

Regional Differences#

Four versions of the game were released: the Japanese version, the North American version, the Asian version and the South American version (labeled as "Hispanic" in MAME).

Region-Specific Screens#

Megaman2pf_fbi_screen.png Megaman2pf_parental_advisory_screen.png
The US version, after the Q-Sound screen, shows these two screens before going to the intro. The first one is the usual FBI'S "WINNERS DOESN'T USE DRUGS" screen used in majority of the games released in the US at the era, while the second one is a parental advisory screen that tries to warn kids about the presence of violence in the game.

None of these screens are present in the other versions, as after the Q-Sound screen, the game goes directly to the intro.

As is typical for the series to that point, the Japanese version uses the typical Rockman-styled logo while the US and Overseas versions use a logo in the style of the NES games' logos from the first game onwards. Curiously, this was one of the last Mega Man games to use this logo style overseas, as Mega Man 8 onwards would use logos closer in style to the Japanese logos.

Ending#

MM2TPFEnding.png
The ending cutscenes outside Wily's destroyed castle actually have text in the Japanese versions, but in international versions, it conspicuously doesn't.

Credits#

The Japanese version has a special credits sequence if you finish the game without continuing and without letting the timer run out during the final Dr. Wily fight. In the other versions, the standard credits sequence is always shown.

Miscellaneous#

Coinage Setting#

Other Versions

US Version

1 COIN 1 CREDIT
2 COINS 1 CREDIT
  • In all versions of the game sans the US set, by default, the player needs only to insert a coin to play the game. In the US version, the player needs to insert two instead. Seems that Capcom U.S.A. really wanted to milk the player's money.

Other#

  • Like in the The Power Battle, some character voice clips are absent in the US and Hispanic versions, especially the ones where Dr. Light actually talks. The Asian version got the worst shame as any instance of characters speaking Japanese was removed or replaced by generic grunts.
  • The Hispanic version has the text translated in Spanish.
  • In the Japanese version, when performing his Up + Attack uppercut attack, Mega Man says "Rock Upper!", referencing his Japanese name, Rockman. In other versions, he simply says "Upper!". Curiously, the "Upper!" voice clip is also used in the Japanese version during the Mega Man/Bass 2-player ending.
