Ib (2022)

The 2022 Ib is a remake of the 2012 RPG Maker horror classic, now using RPG Maker MV. As with the original, translation was handled by VGPerson.

Differences from Freeware#

All comparisons here will be made using English version 1.07 for the original freeware game and English version 1.09 for the remake (the latest version of each at the time of writing).

Gameplay Changes#

Overall#

  • The game's language can now be changed from the settings rather than needing to download a separate copy of the game for each language.
  • Pressing C on the keyboard will toggle between two different levels of zoom so you can inspect things easier.
  • A button to talk to Garry/Mary has been added, including a ton of new dialogue for Garry and Mary.
  • You can now load a save or return to title from the inventory screen for convenience. In the original game, hitting Shift would open a prompt to return to title,

The ledger used to save the game was moved to the end of the front desk instead of in front of the employee, so the player can now save the game as soon as they get control instead of needing to wait for Ib's parents to move first.

Text Changes#

To do:
Add the rest of the changes for the rest of the game.

It should be noted that the original game's textboxes could show up to three lines of text at once, but the remake changed them to be thinner but much wider, meaning that all text is instead on two lines at most. As a result, numerous pieces of text in the game that are otherwise identical will have different indentations between editions. These indentation changes won't be shown here, as otherwise nearly the entire game's script would be here (twice) and they frankly just aren't interesting to look at.

  • The "Exit" option on the title screen was changed to "Quit game" in the remake.

Return to title?
(Unsaved data will be lost.)

Return to title?
(Unsaved progress will be lost.)

The "return to title" next now refers to progress rather than data. The second sentence is also a dimmed grey color in the remake.

You don't know this word...

This line, which displays when looking at any painting that Ib can't read without Garry, was removed.

Intro Cutscene

Original

Remake

Well, we're here.
...This is your first time in
an art gallery, right, Ib?

All right, we're here. ...It's your first time
in an art gallery, isn't it, Ib?

Ib's mother's first piece of dialogue is tweaked slightly.

Remake

And they don't just have paintings,
but also sculptures... and all kinds
of other creations!

Besides just paintings, there are also sculptures...
and all kinds of other creations!

So is her endorsement of the gallery to Ib.

Original

Remake

I don't doubt that
even you'll enjoy it, Ib.

I don't doubt that
even you'll be able to enjoy it, Ib.

Her last line before being interrupted was made less curt.

Original

Remake

Should we get to the reception desk?

Should we check in at the front desk?

Ib's father's first line was rewritten slightly.

Original

Remake

Hm? You want to go on ahead?
Really, Ib... Oh, all right.

Hm? You want to start looking around?
Really now, Ib... Oh, all right.

Ib's mother had another line adjusted. She also now uses a new surprised emotion instead of her usual smile one.

Original

Remake

Not that there's any need to
worry about you, I suppose...

I don't suppose I'll have to worry about that
when it comes to you, though...

Ib's mother had a line entirely reworded to make it clearer that she trusts Ib specifically.

Original

Remake

Don't cause the other visitors
any trouble, now!

Don't cause the other visitors any nuisance, now!

Ib's mother now warns against causing nuisance rather than trouble, presumably because she just finished explaining she didn't need to worry about Ib causing trouble.

Reception Area

Original

Remake

Don't cause the other visitors
any trouble, now!

Don't cause the other visitors any nuisance, now!

This line is repeated if Ib speaks to her mother again while she's still at the front desk, with the same difference as before.

Original

Remake

Don't go behind there, Ib.

Don't get in the man's way, Ib.

When trying to get behind the desk while Ib's parents are present, Ib's father now shows more concern for bothering the employee than her going somewhere she shouldn't.

Original

Remake

Maybe I should take a break...

Maybe I should go have a smoke...

The man at the window by the front desk is keen on getting lung cancer in the remake.

The poster describing the exhibit has multiple changes. The remake also removes the XX/XX/XX date. Words in brackets are only readable when Garry is present, and are otherwise displayed as "???". In the remake, "Weiss Guertena" is written in a yellow color. Also, in the original, this poster uniquely uses a textbox which displays four lines at once; in the remake, it uses the same-sized textbox as everywhere else.

You don't know some of the words...

Just like the generic line used for paintings, this one that appears when reading the poster without Garry was removed in the remake.
