Ib is a classic horror exploration game, created in RPG Maker 2000, starring the titular girl and her journey through a haunted art museum.
This page covers the freeware version of the game. The paid version is here.
Unused Object#
Present in Map 36, the room connecting Gray Space 1 and 2, is a Newton's Cradle present out of bounds, which will only appear if switch 0366:NewtonsCradle is enabled.
Examining it prompts dialogue from Garry:

Database Oddities#
When examining the game's files, both externally and from within the RPG Maker 2000 engine, there are some interesting tidbits that can be found.
Map Titles#
- The coloured areas, e.g. Red Area, Brown Area, Yellow Area, etc. are actually called "spaces" according to the map names, e.g. "Red Space", "Brown Space", "Yellow Space", etc.
- The orange area added in v1.04 is appropriately called the "Orange Space", but interestingly the cyan area is given the name "Abyssal Space".
- The maps within said Abyssal Space also have much more unusual names compared to other areas, most get such glamorous names as "Passage" or "Small Passage":
- The main cyan room with all the large sculptures and portrait of Guertena is called "Abyssal Park".
- The long staircase is named "Stairs to the Afterlife"
- The map Ib falls down to see all the planets is named "Copernicus Birth".
- The black room containing Final Stage and the Black Key is named "Atelier".
File Names#
- Each area has a character set or sets associated with it. The red area's exclusive graphics are in the red_01 file for instance. While most follow suit, there are still some oddities present:
- The Violet Space sprites are stored in "purple" and uses the tileset image "art_purple".
- The Brown Space sprites are stored in "braun" and uses the tileset image "art_braun".
- The Sketchbook's sprites are stored in "pink" and "pink2". Since most of the Sketchbook maps are made using Parallax images rather than tiles, the few actual tiles it does use are instead stored in the "art_green" tileset image to save space.
- The Cyan/Abyssal Space sprites are stored in "ore" and "ore_02". This one is particularly odd as the tileset image "art_ore" is NOT of the Abyssal Space, but rather the Orange Space. The Abyssal Space instead uses "art_sinkai" as its tileset image, likely coming from Japanese 深海, meaning Deep Sea in English.
- To add to the oddness, unlike the other areas, the Orange Space's graphics are instead interspersed throughout numerous files rather than having a dedicated charset. These files include "star", "rose", and "gray_02".
- Mary's name is officially romanized as "Mary" in all instances, with one exception: the file name of her painting (the image shown when Garry discovers Mary is a painting) is called "pict_marry" with two r's.
Control Switches#
Nearly every single painting/sculpture in the True Gallery has a dedicated switch associated with it to keep track of if Ib has seen it, and it will not be visible in the True Gallery if it's off. This includes multiple paintings that should be unavoidable, keeping in mind you must play through the Abyssal and Orange spaces to even access the True Gallery. It should be noted that all of these switches were only added in v1.04, the same time the True Gallery itself was added, so aside from the new areas there should've been no doubt about which paintings were unskippable.
- The painting of the stickman in the Yellow Space has a switch despite being unavoidable. Said switch also gives the portrait's name as "Hide And Seek".
- "The Lady in Red" appears in several places that can be ignored, however it must be looked at in the Red Space to make her Red Key drop and unlock the door.
- Also, EVERY copy of her portrait sets this switch to on, including the one in the black version of the gallery near the end of the game, which is far beyond the required viewing of her.
- "Grieving Bride's Left Hand" and "Couple" in the Gray Space are both required for the Bouquet item and to trigger a cutscene, respectively.
- The cackling painting who eats said bouquet also has a switch despite being the door into the next area, which is extra odd since most other paintings without nameplates are always visible in the True Gallery. Its switch also gives it the title "Flower Liker".
- "Separation" in the Violet Space has a control switch despite the event it triggers with the lights going out being unavoidable to progress. The other unskippable painting in that area, "Red Eyes", actually DOESN'T have a switch for it like the others do.
- "Lady With Her Umbrella" and "Fisherman" in the Brown Space both have switches despite being required, although "A Lone Keyhole", which is also required and in the same area, doesn't.
- "Light Within the Canvas" in the Orange Space is not only required to look at, but also an item in your inventory.
- "Place of Warmth" in the Abyssal Space is required to view to get a piece of Guertena's self-portrait.
- "Three Crows and Five Fish" in the Abyssal Space is also required for a piece of the portrait, although only the name plate is affected by the switch. The painting itself is always visible due to being part of the parallax background.
- The "Forgotten Portrait" has its own switch, switch #883 "163Forgotten", which is different from the switch that keeps track of having seen the ending, switch #468 "ForgottenPortrait". The former switch makes Garry's portrait appear in the black room of the True Gallery, while the latter switch makes Ib's Father appear as an NPC in it. Considering the Forgotten Portrait only appears in its namesake ending, both of these could have used the same switch.
- The "Guertena" self-portrait in the Abyssal Space is, aside from the other aforementioned exceptions, the only required named painting which correctly lacks a switch checking if it's been seen.
- "The Hanged Man" portrait is also technically required to look at it to find one of the passwords in the Gray Space, although the player is able to metagame or randomly guess the correct password without looking at it themself, so it makes sense to have a switch for it.

- The green-haired person below Abyss of the Deep had their dialogue changed to sound more clearly intimidated.
Version 1.05#
Released on April 1st 2013.
- Garry won't comment on the Liars' Room unless you actually do it.
- You can no longer save as solo Mary, since you're locked onto an ending you can't continue from.
- When on a second playthrough, the portraits for the save files have a + in the corner. For old saves, this will only take effect when Ib, Garry, and Mary first join (Ib "joining" when you get an ending).
- The new dungeon is a little easier: there are more vases (one at the start, and a second in Abyssal Park... if Garry-s dead), and the croquis room has one less red guy and no stools to get in the way.
- There are pamphlets in the true exhibition explaining New Game+ and stuff.
- The music list in the true gallery is fancier-looking now.
- Some things that got left out of the true gallery were added, including a very special guest.
Version 1.06#

- Various bits of code were cleaned up to be handled via common events rather than individual circumstances, such as the code used when placing the rose in a vase.
- Variables for Ib and Garry's displayed strength (health), the current map ID, and the displayed map ID were added.
- The rose health display event was modified to check the map being the same as the one the player, and to set the opposing playable character's displayed health as zero (Ib for Garry, Garry for Ib).
- For the worst ending route, a sprite of Mary holding a knife is loaded after her second (common event 28) line of dialogue is spoken.

According to its conditions, it closed the book if you've viewed a death painting, the snake poster was pulled, and Garry's death counter (the counter checking how many objects have been harmed by Garry) was 5 or higher. This would mean you would be unable to save before the Doll Room key event, which was probably deemed too harsh.
