Unobtainable Shiny Pokémon#

To do:

  • Unobtainable transfer-only shinies: Hoopa, Volcanion, Magearna, Kubfu, Urshifu, Zarude, Glastrier, Spectrier, Calyrex, and Pokéball Vivillon.
  • Unobtainable shinies in the Teal Mask DLC: Ogerpon.
  • Unobtainable shiny in the Indigo Disk DLC: Pecharunt, and other forms of Terapagos.

For the sake of consistency, every Pokémon in every Pokémon game is given a Shiny variant. Most Shiny Pokémon have been obtainable through random chance encounters or event distributions, including most Legendaries. However, a few Pokémon cannot be obtained in this form without hacking, and as a consequence normal players would never be able to see their Shiny coloration. The following are currently unavailable:

  • Walking Wake and Iron Leaves.

  • The Loyal Three.

  • Bloodmoon Ursaluna.

Unobtainable Moves#

As usual for new Pokémon games, some moves have been entirely dummied-out and are unavailable. However, some Pokémon are able to learn certain moves through Egg Moves, but are currently unable to learn these moves as there is no Pokémon that can pass down the move to them.

Mega Punch

Can be passed down via Mirror Herb as of the Indigo Disk.

Certain Pokémon are usually unable to obtain specific Egg Moves without the use of a Mirror Herb, but certain very specific encounters come with the move already, allowing for the Egg Move to be transferred down naturally.

Power Shift#

To do:
Does the new effect mentioned in the move description occur? Footage of use in battle?

Power Shift, a move introduced in Legends: Arceus, is in the code for Scarlet and Violet, but it's unused and never called by Metronome. It is a Normal-type Status move with 10 PP (max. 16). In Legends: Arceus, the user's Attack swapped with its Special Attack, while its Defense swapped with its Special Defense.

Interestingly, the move description was changed between titles, implying there were plans to use the move and give it a new effect;

Legends: Arceus

Scarlet & Violet

The user swaps its offensive and defensive stats.

Unused Pokémon Data#

Unused Gift Pokémon#

Present in eventAddPokemon.bin is data for two unused Gift Pokémon: a Level 90 Quagsire and a Level 80 Yanma.

Beyond their high levels, Yanma's inclusion here is especially strange given it isn't included in the base game's Pokédex, though it would be added in the Teal Mask expansion. While Quagsire is obtainable in the base game through evolving a Johtonian Wooper (obtainable via an in-game trade), the data for this gift version remains unused.

Unused Wild Gimmighoul Levels#

Gimmighoul can be found in chests scattered across various parts of the Paldea Region, with each static encounter ranging from being between Levels 5-60. However, data exists for encountering these Gimmighoul at Level 1, despite this never occurring.

Unobtainable Female Terapagos#

The legendary Pokémon Terapagos, found at the end of The Indigo Disk DLC, is set to have a 50/50 gender ratio when encountered in the wild. However, the only time you do encounter it, its personality values are fixed to always be male. This renders its gender ratio, and consequently the ability to have a female Terapagos, unused.

Unused Placeholder Model#

The placeholder model.

Prior to v1.2.0, there was a model of Pikachu (complete with rigging and textures) in place of Walking Wake and Iron Leaves. It is identical to the regular model of Pikachu, including the ability to play animations.

Koraidon & Miraidon Ride Forms#

Limited Build Koraidon's dex entry in Violet. Low-Power Mode Miraidon's dex entry in Violet.

Koraidon and Miraidon's Ride forms are fully functional as individual Pokemon when hacked into the game. All forms use the same model from the special rideable Koraidon/Miraidon found at the beginning of the game. They have no Shiny forms and their stats are identical to their Apex Build and Ultimate Mode, respectively. They use the same cries sounded when using the "Let's Go!" auto-battle feature, even during battle. While Koraidon's animations are largely functional, Miraidon can occasionally T-pose, and has some animations seemingly copied from Koraidon. This most commonly happens with the "Let's Go!" and Picnic features.

Limited Build Koraidon and Low-Power Mode Miraidon in the party menu.

Some battle animations are absent, such as when they use their signature moves, Collision Course and Electro Drift, respectively; however, others exist for both, such as a biting attack animation. When Terastallized, they will wear their Tera Jewels backwards. While Koraidon has no animation when the Tera Jewel glows, Miraidon does1. In the party menu, their icons are offset, likely due to being intended for the slot used by the player in the normal game.

If used with the Synchro Machine from the Indigo Disk DLC, they are fully functional, with animations for battling, walking, and running. Curiously, in this setting, Miraidon walks on all fours, akin to Koraidon, similar to how it acts when it is sent out during a picnic.

Dex Entries#

Koraidon and Miraidon have unused dex entry data for the base version of their Limited Build/Low-Power Mode "ride form". It is currently unknown what this data would be used for.

Koraidon

Scarlet Pokédex

Violet Pokédex

The ecology and other data about this Pokémon are unknown. It was named Koraidon by the professor who discovered it.
It has similar characteristics to a creature described in an old book as the Winged King.

There are some discrepancies in height and weight:

  • Each Ride build of Koraidon is 11'6" / 3.5m tall, which makes it taller than the Apex Build, being 8'02" / 2.5m. Curiously, this makes the Ride builds of Koraidon as tall as Ultimate Mode Miraidon.
  • Each Ride mode of Miraidon is 9'2" / 2.7m tall, which is smaller than the Ultimate Mode, being 11'6" / 3.5m tall.

Alternate Form Names#

Since Koraidon's and Miraidon's various "ride forms" can't be viewed in the Pokédex, the text strings for their names go unused.

Unused Graphics#

A variety of placeholder graphics for different purposes.

Placeholder type icons. These assets could be seen in game if the player were to enter certain menus, as the assets are placed there while the actual assets that are used load. Additionally Pokémon without a type due to losing it via moves can cause these assets to load.2

Hypno Artwork#

Included in Hypno's female data (pm0097/pm0097_01_00) is a texture featuring Hypno's official artwork with a poorly-drawn female symbol on the bottom-right corner. This texture is never seen on the female Hypno model, however.

Unused Items#

These two items have no names or descriptions, so their purpose is unknown.

Oddities#

Internal Pokemon Name Oddities#

  • While most Pokemon up to those introduced in Sword & Shield are labelled with their official Japanese names, Zarude's entry is simply labelled "m23", a reference to Zarude being the star Pokemon of the 23rd animated movie, Secrets of the Jungle.
  • The internal names for Toedscool and Toedscruel are OKAKINGU & OKAGYARADOSU respectively, suggesting that they were originally planned as Convergent counterparts for Magikarp and Gyarados, before eventually changing to Tentacool and Tentacruel.
  • Entries for Walking Wake & Iron Leaves, Paradox Pokemon who weren't implemented until the 1.2.0 update, existed in the base game, labelled "AKETUBAN" & "BKETUBAN". KETUBAN (Ketsuban) translates to "missing number", commonly abbreviated as MissingNo.
  • The entries for Roaring Moon & Iron Valiant are amusingly labelled "AAAAA" & "BBBBB".

v1.1.0#

Went live on December 1, 2022.

  • A bug causing the Elite Four and Top Champion battle themes to incorrectly only loop the first 15 seconds of each theme was fixed.
  • Pokémon afflicted with Sleep in battle now close their eyes.
  • Certain Pokémon now use their proper idle animations in battle.
  • An exploit making it possible to clone the special rideable Koraidon/Miraidon via bypassing the restriction on sending it to your boxes with well-timed button presses was removed (though the item-duplication method utilizing said clones was not, so it can still be used by players who had used the exploit before applying the update).
  • The glitched fixed RNG in the Battle Stadium was patched.
  • Unspecified bug fixes.

v1.2.0#

This needs some investigation.
Discuss ideas and findings on the talk page.
Specifically: Check if Hisuian Zorua's stats were also changed in 1.2.0.

Went live on February 27, 2023.

  • Added 2 new Paradox Pokémon, Walking Wake and Iron Leaves.
  • Added functionality with Pokémon GO, allowing players to send GO Postcards to their Scarlet/Violet game and have alternate versions of Vivillon spawn in-game.
  • Online Competitions and Friendly Competitions have been added to the Battle Stadium.
  • Support for the DLC, adding a button on the main menu that redirects the user to the DLC's Nintendo eShop page.
  • Hisuian Zorua and Zoroark are now obtainable in-game through a mystery gift for the latter.
  • Pokémon summary screens are now consistent, allowing every feature to be accessed no matter where the summary screen is opened from.
  • Additional functionality has been added for Pokémon boxes:
    • Players can swap out held items by pressing the Y button while in the Held Items view.
    • Players are able to select All Boxes while moving Pokémon or items in the Party and Boxes and Held Items view.
    • In the Battle Team view, Pokémon in the user's Boxes assigned to a Battle Team will now have their icons displayed in a darker hue if those Pokémon are members of the Battle Team currently being displayed.
  • The news screen now shows when connecting to the internet through a menu that is not the Poké Portal.
  • Multiple fixes to Tera Raids that would halt/break the raid:
    • The Tera Raid Pokémon's health bar would not properly show the health of the Pokémon when hit with certain moves (Play Rough, for example).
    • In 7-star raids, all Pokémon on the player's side could faint despite the health bar suggesting that the Pokémon still had HP remaining.
    • If a raid Pokémon were to do specific actions while the player was choosing a move, the player would be unable to input anything.
    • A player that joined a raid would see a different raid Pokémon than what the host would see.
    • A player joining a Tera Raid from the Tera Raid screen could join a different raid from what was displayed.
    • Tera Raid Crystals could stop appearing for a certain amount of time.
  • Type match-ups no longer show against a Pokémon if the Pokémon faints in Double Battles.
  • Type match-ups against a Zoroark disguised under Illusion and Terastallized now show the Zoroark's Tera Type instead of the disguised Pokémon's type.
  • Zoroark disguised under Illusion and Terastallized can no longer be identified using the Check Target option.
  • Dondozo no longer gets boosts from Tatsugiri when using Order Up when the move should fail (Protect, Detect, etc.).
  • Destiny Bond will now work if a Pokemon Terastallizes after using Destiny Bond and then faints.
  • The game no longer crashes at certain points of the game.
    • However, fewer NPCs and Pokémon may spawn in order to prevent this from happening.
  • Pokémon not in the Paldea Pokédex are no longer "registered" when being obtained through Link Trade.
  • Certain actions caused the main character to stop expressing emotions until the game was closed and reopened in 1.1.0. This has been fixed in 1.2.0.
  • After Ranked Battles Season 1, visiting the Ranked Battles screen immediately after the season’s results had been calculated caused an error right after the player received their rewards. Following this error, players were unable to participate in any further Ranked Battles. This has been fixed.
  • A Pokémon that wins a battle in Master Ball rank now receives the Master Rank ribbon 100% of the time.
  • Link Trading a Pokémon back to the Original Trainer above the level limit would stop the Pokémon from listening to the OT. This has been fixed.
  • If you already had a Pokémon registered to your Pokédex, obtaining a Shiny variant or a foreign variant is now registered in the Pokédex.
  • An exploit that allowed the player to gain infinite speed while gliding on Koraidon/Miraidon was fixed.
  • Objects such as Poké Balls are no longer displayed in certain areas unintentionally.
  • Passersby are no longer displayed during certain battles that take place in towns during the main story.
  • Hisuian Zoroark's stats were updated to use Legends: Arceus' stat spread rather than a copy of Original Zoroark's.
  • Additional unspecified bug fixes.

v1.3.0#

Went live on April 20, 2023.

  • Fixed a bug where players who still had version 1.1.0 of the game during the Walking Wake/Iron Leaves event and caught a Bad Egg by mistake due to these Pokemon not having data prior to 1.2.0 were unable to catch them after updating. (The Bad Eggs themselves were not removed, however.)
  • The deadline for entries for Friendly Competitions was changed from when the Competition begins to when it ends.
  • Several Link Battle bugs were fixed:
    • Attempting to switch in a new Pokémon just before the selection timer reached zero could cause the switch to fail, resulting in abnormal behavior.
    • The remaining time for the battle would no longer be displayed once it was under one minute.
    • The selection timer for sending in a new Pokémon to replace a fainted one could be reduced depending on the move used to faint it.
  • Fixed a bug introduced in 1.2.0 where Cud Chew would continue to activate every other turn after the initial instance, rather than only once.
  • The Check Status screen of a Zoroark disguised under Illusion and Terastallized now shows the Zoroark's Tera Type instead of the disguised Pokémon's type.
  • Similarly, the Check Status screen of a Zoroark disguised under Illusion as an already-Terastallized Pokémon now shows the Zoroark's type instead of the disguised Pokémon's Tera Type.
  • Hitting two opposing Pokémon with one move in a Double Battle while one of them is behind a Substitute no longer causes any stat changes the user would receive from the move to be applied twice.
  • Fixed a crash issue involving pairing with a Pokémon GO account.
  • Receiving the Hisuian Zoroark Mystery Gift can no longer count as the first sighting of a regular Zoroark for the Pokédex registry.
  • Additional unspecified bug fixes.

(Source: Nintendo Customer Support)

v3.0.1#

Went live on January 31, 2024.

  • Fixed a bug where the game would stop responding to button input if an item was used to level up Inkay to level 29 or lower.
  • TM223 (Metal Sound) had its crafting materials changed to not need Shieldon Claws, due to Shieldon only natively appearing in Violet in The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero .
  • Fixed a bug where players could get stuck between the item printer and the wall by speaking to the character next to the item printer and opening the printing menu.
  • Fixed a bug that would keep Dragon Cheer's attack and critical hit chance boosts even when switched out of battle.
  • Fixed a bug where Calyrex would keep TM moves it can only learn when in its "Ice Rider" or "Shadow Rider" forms when decoupled from Glastrier or Spectrier, respectively.
  • An undocumented change happened where the move Transform now fails during wild battles unless used by a Ditto or a Mew.
    • This was to "fix" a cloning glitch/exploit where wild Smeargle in The Indigo Disk found near a tree wouldn't properly transform back after using the move (via obtaining it with Sketch) should the player flee the battle, effectively cloning the Pokémon and held item.

v.4.0.0#

Went live on June 2, 2025.

  • Improved image quality and frame rate while playing on Nintendo Switch 2.
  • The number of Pokémon which spawn while playing on Nintendo Switch 2 is increased from 15-16 max to 33-36.
