King of Kings (Namco, NES)

King of Kings is a Japan-only fantasy turn-based strategy game developed by Atlus and published by Namco. Players command kings, knights, fairies, dragons, and assorted other fantasy creatures in an attempt to become, appropriately enough, the king of kings.

Not to be confused with the considerably more Biblical NES game with a similar title.

Secret "ILOVEYOU" Save Name#

A small Easter egg is hidden in the game's save-name entry screen.

When saving a game, select the fourth save slot and enter either オオタニ トモコ (Ōtani Tomoko) or アヘ゛ ヒロミ (Abe Hiromi).

With the cursor on オワリ ("End"), hold A, B, or both buttons on Controller II while confirming the name.

Upon returning to the save-file list, the name of the fourth slot will have been replaced with:

ILOVEYOU

Both names trigger the same message. The second name is written in the game's character-entry format as アヘ゛ (ヘ followed by a dakuten) rather than using a single ベ character.1

Who Ōtani Tomoko and Abe Hiromi were, or why their names were singled out for this particular declaration of affection, is unknown.
