R-Type (TurboGrafx-16)

The TurboGrafx-16 port of R-Type was an early showcase for the system, thanks to its arcade fidelity.

Regional Differences#

R-Type for the PC Engine turned out to be a 4-megabit game at a time when only 2-megabit HuCards were available. Rather than reduce the size of the ROM, Hudson chose to split the game onto two cards (R-Type I and R-Type II) released a couple months apart. By the time the game was released in the US, larger HuCards were available and the whole game was released on one card.

There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough pictures. Please fix this.
Specifically: Comparison screenshots that show sprite flicker.

The Japanese version runs at a resolution of 352×242 and allows 16 onscreen sprites per scanline. This was apparently pushing the hardware a bit too close to the limit, so the US version was reprogrammed to run at 336×242 and only 12 sprites per scanline. As a result, the US version has more sprite flicker.
