Super R-Type is a semi-port of the arcade game R-Type II.
Level Select#
At the title screen where the settings are displayed, hold R and press Up (×9), listening for a sound. During the game, pause and press Select + R + A and a number will appear in the lower left corner, which can be changed by pressing Up/Down.

Regional Differences#
Logo and Title Screen#
The Japanese Super Famicom version boots up to an IREM logo screen, while the SNES version is missing this screen entirely.

The easiest difficulty setting is labeled "KIDS" in the Japanese version, and "NOVICE" in the International version.
Additionally, when the player presses Start to begin the game in the International version, a "1-up" sound effect is played. In the Japanese version, there is no sound effect at all.
Background Graphics#
The far background in the first stage has had its graphics completely redrawn between versions. The Japanese version had an asteroid field with a close-up of Jupiter scrolling by, while the International version changed it to a collection of smaller planets of various colours:

STAFF AND MUSIC LIST |
The Japanese version has an Escape track, while the international versions combined the name of the Escape song with the Ending song.
Musical Easter Eggs#
SOLO SORTIE is roughly 2:55 in length. Only the first ~1:44 of the track plays before the stage transitions to the boss fight. The remainder of the track can only be heard using an external music player.
BLAST ROCK has a hidden ending to the track from 16:39 - 16:47 that can only be heard using an external music player. It is an homage to the game over tune THE END OF A WAR from the arcade version of R-Type.
A SUBMERGING TITAN has a hidden 10-second trumpet riff at 8:00 - 8:10 that can only be heard using an external music player.
