Paris-Dakar Rally Special

Paris-Dakar Rally Special is a very weird take on the titular Paris-Dakar Rally, being an ambitious though rather kusoge-y multi-genre game consisting of adventure, shoot 'em up, top down racing and platformer segments, not unlike later Famicom/NES games such as The Adventures of Bayou Billy and Ultimate Stuntman rather than a traditional racing game.

Unused Graphics#

To do:
These graphics are found with the codelogger feature of Mesen, and apparantly there're more of them that I couldn't confirm are unused.

It seems like the ending would've have the 4 Wheel Drive Car in place of the Sport Car if the player has chosen the respective racing car at the beginning, but it went unused and is unreferenced in code (see Oddities section).

Unused "Dakar" graphic.

Unused "Goal" graphic. No goal mark in this style can be found in-game.

Missing Tiles#

The car silhouette on the title screen is missing one of its tiles from the CHR.

Unseen Details#

Due to oversight, several tiles have palette $30 and palette $20 assigned to two of their colors (which has the same color in NES palette), resulting their details being obscured.

Unused Music#

This page or section needs more audio.
There's a whole lotta words here, but not enough audio. Please fix this.
Specifically: Rip the musics and confirm that they're actually unused.

Setting the RAM address $CF to the following value to hear them in-game.

Track 3A#

A slower version of the title theme.

Track 43#

Possibly an unused "death" jingle. Your car simply explodes when you run out of lives in-game, and running out of fuel or time simply brings you to the Game Over screen.

Oddities#

  • Track 06, 07, 08 all points to the same song (which is the theme of Level 3 and the ground segments of Level 4).
  • No matter which car you choose, the first part of the ending always use the sport car.

Debug Mode#

At the title screen, press Up, Up, Down, B, Right, Left, Left, Start. You will now obtain 99 lives at the start of each level and can skip the current level by pressing Select + Start.
