Resolution#

Famicom

MSX

On top of the overall technical downgrade of this port, such as the lack of transparency around sprites roaming the world, the resolution on MSX is 256*192 as opposed to 256*240 on NES, which results in a couple less background tiles at the top and bottom of the screen. As a result, some menus such as this item list are ordered horizontally instead of vertically.

On the plus side, the MSX version does not need to cover pixels on the left side of the screen to hide scrolling artifacts.

Secret Item#

This Easter egg is only present in the MSX version. At a certain point in the game, if you speak to the King of Ladatorm while the princess's inventory is empty, he'll give you the Skimpy Swimsuit (And now you know what La-Mulana was referencing.). The suit has a defense of 1 and cannot be sold.

The Japanese text translates to "Whoa, that lady behind you isn't even wearing cotton clothes! It's pitiful that somebody so cute doesn't have anything to wear."

Each of the three protagonists make a comment. Despite being cousins with the princess of Moonbrooke, both the prince of Midenhall and of Cannock seem to be pleased with the swimsuit.

But the most shocking thing about the whole scene might be that this is the only line spoken by the prince of Midenhall in the entire game.

Different encounters#

This version includes some new encounters not present in other versions which are particularly nasty.

A group of three Metal Hunters in some of the first rooms of the Cave to Rhone. In the original version the maximum was 2 at once.

A group of three Killing Machines in Rhone, although it could be accompanied by other enemy types, the maximum in the original was a single one at once.

A group of four Mace Masters on the third floor of Hargon's Castle, instead of 2. Yes, they are the ones who can revive their fallen comrades.
