Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is the first game in the Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker series.

Unused Areas#
Watch on YouTubeThere is an unused area referred to as K003 in the game's files. "K" is used within the game's files as a prefix for areas related to scoutsposts. The area has functioning collision, but no footstep sounds. There is a functioning warp marker at the entrance "tunnel", but its resultant warp location is invalid and will lead to being spawned out of bounds (unless modified, as in the demonstration video). An Argon Lizard encounter is scripted to appear inside, but with no valid encounter table. As a result, when fought, random monsters and a random battle background are selected. It also has no music setup, so it will inherit the music track that was already playing when K003 is entered. After battle, there will be no music playing.

Watch on YouTubeThere is an unused area referred to as S091 in the game's files. The "S" prefix is used by the game for exterior areas, with the first number after the 0 corresponding to an island's number (for example, all Domus Isle exterior map areas begin with S02X, like S021, S022, and S023). Playable maps start at S001 (Infant Isle) and end at S072 (the second half of post-disaster Infern Isle). S091 appears to be a debug area with broken geometry, no skybox, and no actual event scripting, but it may also have been a placeholder for a "tenth" island (and implies the existence of a S08X chain for a ninth island).

Unused Monsters#
There are several monster races that are unused in the game's files. A few unused monsters have names in the North American release (ex. firebird), but most instead have dummy names (ex. DUMMY M120). All of the unused monsters have names in the Japanese version of the game.

Darkonium Pieces#
In order to progress through the game, the player has to collect a total of 10 darkonium crystals. There are several things that suggest it was planned at one point for the player to be able to collect smaller pieces of darkonium crystals, and when the player obtained 5 pieces they would combine together into a full crystal.
- When obtaining a darkonium crystal, an animation plays showing 5 pieces of the darkonium crystal combining to form the full crystal.
- The game stores the number of darkonium crystals the player has obtained in an unsigned 8-bit integer, where the value is 5 times the number of darkonium crystals the player has (ex. when the player has 3 darkonium crystals the value is 15).
- Unused Japanese text in the North American release describes the player obtaining potentially more than one darkonium crystal piece at a time.
