This needs some investigation. |
Dragon Quest V is the fifth installment of the series. It's the first game of the series that allows monsters to join your party as well as the ability to time travel. It was unreleased outside Japan until its remake for the Nintendo DS.
Debug Mode#
Walk-Through-Walls Mode#
The Game Genie code DD6D-DDD0 (set ROM byte 0x8000 to 00) activates a walk-through-walls mode when the player holds B.
Broken Debug Menu Option#
Another code DD6D-DD00 (set ROM byte 0x8001 to 00) shows signs in the game that there used to be a debug mode.

When you bring up the menu with A and select the second option for party status, there will be a new fifth option いんちき "cheat." This would supposedly open the debug menu, but it crashes the game. It attempts to call two subroutines that would have existed beyond the limit of the retail game's ROM data, at ROM offsets 0x180542 and 0x18036F.
Debug Text Boxes#
Data for how to display the debug menu's text boxes (albeit without the actual functionality) is still present in the game. Change the byte at ROM offset 0x2D60E from 03 to any hex value from 8C through 92 to replace what the HPとMP menu option displays.
The debug menu options are: Flag Set, Speed Change, Level Change, Map Check, Save, Object Check, Sound Test, and Cheating Return/Zoom. "Object Check" may have been a sprite tester.
Cheat#
There's a hidden cheat in the game only activated under very strange condition. Often called as "Hitoshikonomi" (ひとしこのみ), named after the first syllable of each required item, you need to equip your protagonist with these and said items only in exact order:
- Cypress stick (ひのきのぼう)
- Bone stake (とがったホネ)
- Happy hat (しあわせのぼうし)
- Oaken club (こんぼう)
- Saw blade (のこぎりがたな)
- Cloak of evasion (みかわしのふく)
If done correctly, your party member's attack will always be counted as a critical hit, and any recruitable monsters will join you by 100% chance. This secret feature is never hinted in any official media, and made unavailable in subsequent ports, so it's probably an artifact of development that they simply forgot to remove.
