To do:
There appears to be more unused dialogue. The sources should be verified, though.

Alan Wake 2 is the sequel to the first one. Spooky shadow people scare me!

Unused Areas#

Test Areas#

Several test areas still exist in the game files, most of which were testing verious scenes or enemies:

Warp_Zone (a hub area from which the player could warp to the different test areas, and also includes The Janitor arcade game which will be elaborated on below)

Thrower_Forest

Store_Combat

Shooting_Range

Ability_Debug

Start_Room

Slops_Stairs_Test

Leashing_Zones_Enemies

Binder_Nursinghome (has 4 more duplicates with different enemies)

Replay Arcade and The Janitor Arcade Game#

Alan's hub world was meant to have an Arcade Store called Replay Arcade, which was meant to be accessible by Alan. The store would've had a fully playable arcade game featuring Ahti as he fights rats and mold and collects coins.

The arcade store still exists in the game and several signs in the map still point towards it, but the entrence door is normally locked off and can only be unlocked using cheets. The Janitor arcade game is also fully playable and can be activated by interacting with the arcade machine.

The arcade game was eventually repurposed for Episode 3 of the Night Springs DLC, but was changed to feature The Actor instead of Ahti, fighting Time Breaker in a combat more similar to AW2's base combat.

Unused Items#

In the folder that contains all the image files for the inventory items, there are several images for items and charms which were not used in the game. Some of them are crude placeholder paintings, as they were scrapped quite early.

The images for "darkplace_janitor_key" is simply a placeholder version to an existing item which rechived a different render image.

Unused Audio#

To do:
Can someone who can actually run the game and pull these audio files (the ones with actual data) and actually put them here instead of describing them and add any other unused dialogue you can find?

test_idles#

Test lines from Sam Lake. Only one of them, 20210126_samlak_ml_pangrams_happy_take0002_range04_regression.wem, seems to have any actual data.

x_prototypes#

Audio files likely pertaining to the proof-of-concept.

dark_place_vs_cinematic#

Early audio of the scene in which Wake kills Casey.

hmc_test#

A folder containing two pairs of audio of Ilkka Villi and Matthew Poretta going back-and-forth performing dialogue as Alan Wake in an apparent attempt to synch-up. Also includes a line from Ilkka performing as Tom Zane to complete the dialogue.

The dialogue appears in the "AWE" DLC for Control, though it's not currently known if any of the audio here is the exact same as the audio in the DLC.

Unused Textures#

Taken Pat Maine#

There are leftover textures for a taken version of Pat Maine, suggesting he was going to be turned into one during the game. In the files, taken are also named "Marked".

Early Plot Board Images#

There are several unused images for the plotboard scene images in the Coldera Street Station level. They are all categorized as "Graffity", and stand out by having very flat and early lighting. Based on the assets in them, they are likelty early versions of the "Tourchbearers" rendition of each scene. Another indicator is that the "Tourchbearer" scenes from the final game also feature a lot of yellow light sensitive marks on the walls as shown in the "graffity" images, but since those are not visible without pointing a flashlight directly at them they are not outright visible in the images in the final game.

Early "Graffity" Scene Images

Final "Touchbearers" Scene Images

The Janitor Arcade Game#

Assets from the unused Janitor Arcade game. The game can still be found in an unused arcade store in the game and in some of the debug areas and is fully playable. More about it can be seen in the "Unused Areas" section.

Placeholder inventory Images#

Several placeholder images of items which made it into the final game and rechived different images.

Placeholder Mosanic Images#

Placeholder versions of the shifting mosanic images from the subway station level, which feature a deer and a hunter moving across the mosanic walls as the player makes progress. Interestingly, in the placeholder images the hunter manages to kill the deer while in the final game it is the hunter who ends up being killed.

whiteboxing#

A couple textures containing labelled palettes taken from this freeware, the second one being a greyscale version.

whiteboxing_temp#

Development textures for various locations, including a lot of early and/or unused textures.

To do:
There are a lot more temp textures stored in this folder, for almost every location in the game. However some of them might be used in the final game, therefore the rest will be gradually after being proved as unused.

Dark Place#

A folder that contains several temp textures for the dark place and Mr. Door's talk show. One thing of note is that the poster of Mr. Door features Lance Reddick instead of David Harewood. Reddick was likely would've been casted as Mr. Door had he not passed away, partially for meta reasons as he previously played a character in one of Remedy's previous games - Quantum Break.

Doorname#

A folder for all the name signs for the doors in the Valhalla Nursing home.

While some of them are used in the game, some are left unused and feature names of residents which were cut during development.

Abigail was planned to be a major character and has many unused lines as well as other leftover mentions in the game files. Emmett, who only make appearance in a manuscript in the final game, also meant to have a bigger role and was mentioned by Abigail in her lines.

Furthermore, Abigail, Emmett, Mortimer and Oswin have been featured in concept art posted on ArtStation by Oliver Ödmark - suggesting they were planned to make physical appearances.

Bunker#

A folder which contains two textures for the bunker overlap level. One of which is a placeholder graffity texture of Nora's face.
