Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is a platform game based on the film of the same name.
Sub Pages#
Unused Audio#
mini_golf#
Unused track that was supposed to play during the Mini-Golf minigame in Africa Arcade. This has instead been replaced with other tracks from the game soundtrack that play for each course.
rhino_attack#
Unused track. It's unknown where this was supposed to play, but it likely could have been when you attack a rhino with bees after the "Take Photos!" minigame in The Watering Hole, which would explain the name.
sambadejaneiro#
Unused track found in Volcano Rave. It's a song by german group Bellini. This likely was supposed to be in the place of Angel, considering it's the only track in Volcano Rave without a proper release outside of the game and without lyrics, but was scrapped for unknown reasons.
luggage_cargohold/coach/firstclass#
Unused sound effects found in Prepare to Launch. These were likely supposed to play after each round of the "Kick Suitcases!" Marty minigame.
level_complete#
Unused sound effect found in Prepare to Launch. This was likely supposed to be played at the end of every level, but then got scrapped and forgotten to be deleted in the Prepare to Launch folder.
general_damage_13/15/16/19_gloria#
Unused voice lines found in Up to the Plane. Gloria is not able to be damaged in this level, and in other levels where she is able to these voicelines still do not play. These voice lines have also all been dubbed in other languages.
wh_takingnanapicture_nana#
Unused voice line found in The Watering Hole. This was supposed to play when taking Nana's picture in the "Take Photos!" minigame. This voice line has also been dubbed in other languages.
wg_wc_pearlhints1_moto#
Unused voice line found in Water Caves. This mentions a scrapped mechanic. It was once possible to run out of bubbles to shoot, and you were able to fill up in jet streams. This voice line has also been dubbed in other languages. You can also see more proof of this scrapped mechanic in The Crate Escape Trailer.
guy_falls#
Unused audio of a scream found in Dam Busters. Judging by the name, the tourists were once meant to be able to fall somewhere.
Unused Text#
All data below was manually extracted directly from each level's .bld file and examining the internal ENGLISH.pak files.
Level |
Text |
Notes |
|---|---|---|
Global |
"minigolf_pinball" |
Text pointing to an unused golf course that cannot be found anywhere in the game's assets. |
Global |
"Bad photo. Take pictures of the 6 subjects." |
The game only features two photo-taking sequences (The Watering Hole and Wooing Gloria), and both only require photographing 5 subjects. |
Global |
"Do you want to keep this picture?" |
Likely intended for a cut mechanic that would allow players to save their photos, or serve as a double-check prompt before submission in the photo-taking sequences. |
Global |
"Wide Plus" |
Likely referencing a discarded screen resolution option. |
Duty Free Shop |
"Happy", "Hungry", "Tired", "Hunger" |
Text likely intended for the monkeys in the Monkey Gallery, suggesting there was originally a mechanic tracking the monkeys' moods. |
Duty Free Shop |
"Alex Rites Hat", "Gloria Swimsuit", "Marty Baselball Cap", "Melman Clock Head", "Moto Moto Mustache" |
References to unused cosmetics that cannot be purchased in the Duty Free Shop. They can, however, be equipped in-game by entering the "Unlock Levels" cheat code, which only functions on NTSC PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, and Wii. |
Duty Free Shop |
"Concept Art", "Card Match - bonus card 1", "Card Match - bonus card 2" |
Unused shop items that are completely absent from the final game. |
Duty Free Shop |
"Mini-Golf Bonus Hole 3" |
An extra entry listed for the shop. While the hole does exist in the final game, it cannot be bought here and is only accessible by inputting the "Secret Hole" cheat code. Or this might also be referencing to "minigolf_pinball", the completely absent golf course. |
Prepare to Launch |
"bonus loot" |
A text asset for entirely cut content. |
Prepare to Launch/Up to the Plane |
"Board the elevator", "PUSH!", "out of 3", "You completed the level!", "Press [ to restart.", "Collect the Rivets", "Talk to Maurice", "Talk to Skipper", "Talk to Julien", "Repeat the patterns to tie the rope." |
Text strings referencing actions that technically happen, except the final game handles them automatically without requiring manual interactions (such as needing to manually speak to characters). |
Up to the Plane |
"Go down", "Stay" |
Unused directional or behavioral text strings found in this level. |
The Watering Hole |
"Photographed", "Adventure?", "Visit the" |
Text strings that are technically unused but still loosely connected to elements present in the level. |
The Watering Hole |
"Enter Safari Tour?" |
A text prompt that highly points to a completely cut level or minigame. |
Melman's Clinic |
"Patient Cured!", "You've Failed!" |
Though these specific scenarios happen within the minigame, these text notifications never actually display. |
Penguin Caper |
"Give the Guides Some Candy" |
Referencing the section where you throw candy at guides, probably hinting at an early concept where players could bribe the guards instead of attacking them. |
Penguin Caper/Penguin Getaway |
"Congratulations!", "Press the "Back" Button", "Got the Walkie Talkies!", "Grab Beehive", "Find a Way In", "Find a Way Up", "Get To The Platform", "penguinmortar", "Roar", "Start Spinning", "Good job, Private!" |
A massive collection of miscellaneous text strings that represent entirely cut content. |
Penguin Caper/Penguin Getaway |
"Enter the Gift Shop", "Exit the Gift Shop" |
References to the final sequence of the level; however, the text never triggers because entering and exiting happens automatically rather than manually. |
Penguin Getaway |
"Buzz the Guards", "Get the Items", "Follow Skipper", "Call the Troops", "Super Slide", "Toss the Bone", "Toss the Private", "Durian!", "Stop the Guards!" |
Completely cut content strings that hold no relevance to any events occurring in the final level. |
Convoy Chase |
"All Trucks Defeated!", "Get In The Target!", "Time's Up!", "Truck Captured!", "Wipeout!", "You Lost Them!" |
These text strings never appear on-screen, despite the fact that all of these situations actually occur during the final level. |
Convoy Chase |
"Chuckie", "Duke", "Pierre", "JoJo", "Bugsy", "Doc", "Zanzibar", "Kirk, "Denny", "Jackson" |
A list of 10 names that are completely different from those in the final game, likely serving as beta names for the collectible monkeys. |
Fix The Plane |
"Press [ and ] to enter Plane" |
It's impossible to enter the plane in this level. The plane is only controllable in Dam Busters, where manual entry is still not required. |
Fix The Plane/Monkey Match |
"Winston", "Bob", "Clem" |
The internal names of monkeys that appear in the level, though their names are never explicitly displayed. |
Fix The Plane/Monkey Match |
"Poindexter", "Brain" |
Two completely unrelated words found in this level's data that make no contextual sense. |
Rites of Passage |
"Find the canyon rite", "Find the second wallclimb rite" |
Text suggesting that players were originally expected to search for and locate the rites themselves, rather than Makunga giving directions and spawning the player directly there. |
Rites of Passage |
"This time you hit @ lions!", "You need to hit @ lions to advance!", "This time you survived for @ seconds!", "You need to survive for @ seconds to advance!" |
Score-tracking text elements likely tied to a cut mechanic from the dodgeball sequence. |
Rites of Passage/Musical Chairs/Hot Durian |
"Hooray! You win!", "Level Complete!" |
General unused celebratory strings. |
Wooing Gloria |
"Smash Gophers" |
Text referencing gameplay content that was completely removed from the game. |
Wooing Gloria/Juicy Juicy |
"Fruit Lost" |
Text that was likely meant to trigger if you dropped a fruit from your cart back in Juicy Juicy. |
Wooing Gloria/Juicy Juicy |
"Collect 15 Fruits" |
An unused objective string, as the maximum amount of fruit the final game ever asks you to gather is 12. |
Volcano Rave |
"Samba De Amigos" |
Text reference to an unused song, which is also found in the audio files. |
Volcano Rave |
"Restart Song", "Stop Song" |
Indicates that players were once meant to restart and stop songs without the Debug Menu. |
Volcano Rave |
"Oops", "Ouch", "Whoops", "Nice!", "Good!", "Great!", "Excellent!", "Awesome!", "Amazing!", "Incredible!", "Magnificent!", "Unbelievable!" |
Unused performance reactions that likely belonged to a scrapped feature grading how well the player was performing. |
Mort's Adventure |
"Move onto Teeter-Totter to Use" |
An unused instructional text line. |
Debug Options#
There is a cheat code that unlocks multiple debug options. This code can't normally be enabled, but it can be hacked into the game. Here you can download a savefile for the PC version with the cheat code hacked in.
Debug Menu#
The Debug Menu is a level select screen that allows you to browse through all the main story levels, minigame levels, and other levels such as the Map, Duty Free Shop and Credits. But selecting Credits doesn't warp you to the credits, so that one is probably not working properly.

Freecam#
- By pressing LT+RT+A you can activate the freecam. This can be used on most levels, including the title screen.
- You can move downwards and upwards by pressing LT/RT.
- By pressing LB/RT you can also adjust the camera speed in a range of 25/200%.
The only way to get back in control of your character is to reset the level by exiting and re-entering, since if you exit using B like shown on screen you will just stop controlling the camera but won't be able to gain control of your character back.
Frame rate overlay#
- By pressing D-Pad Up+Y you can activate an overlay which shows multiple information including frame rate, actors and particles.
- If you press it again while the overlay is already up, it will expand and also show all the models that are loaded in at that moment.
Volcano Rave Options#
In Volcano Rave, both Story Mode and Africa Arcade,
- by pressing LB you can restart the level at any point during gameplay.
- by pressing B during a song you can immediately end the song and win, no matter how many points you had up until that point.
- by pressing LT you can skip the tutorial.
Skipping Checkpoints#
In the main menu,
- by holding LB and pressing RB as many times as the number of the checkpoint you want to be in, the next time you enter a level you will be in the checkpoint you chose.
For example, if you press RB 5 times you will be in the 5th checkpoint of the level.
Additional Options#
There are also some other options that are not enabled by the cheat code, that to be used need to be hacked into the game separately. At this time, these options were able to be hacked only in the PlayStation 2 version.

Platform Differences#
Slot Machine#
The Slot Machine in the level Fix the Plane is not present in the PlayStation 2 version. This reduced the coins number of the level from 300 to just 8, since you get 292 from playing at the slot machine until you get the Super Jackpot. It also reduced the goals number from 9 to 8, since getting the jackpot is a goal on other platforms.

Pinball#
The Pinball minigame at the end of the level "Mort's Adventure" is also not present in the PlayStation 2 version. This reduced the coins number of the level from 100 to 90, since there is a golden coin in the pinball section. And it reduced the goals number from 3 to 2.

The pinball machine is still actually in the game, though. When entering the trunk at the end of the level, where you would get teleported to the pinball machine on other platforms, on PlayStation 2 the last cutscene of the level of Mort sliding down the trunk plays. But by getting out of bounds, you can actually see that the pinball machine is still there and it's also sort of functional. The camera goes all over the place when trying to play, but you can actually get there. Unfortunately, the missing golden coin is not there though.
Mini-Golf Ball-Stop#
On PlayStation 2 and Wii, you can buy the Mini-Golf Ball-Stop in the Duty Free Shop. This is not possible on other platforms, where you instead are required to insert the cheat code.
Monkey Match Goal#
On PlayStation 2 and Wii, you can get the "Match the Parts" goal in Fix the Plane even if you play Monkey Match in Africa Arcade.
Cheat Codes#
- The "Giant Frogs" cheat code does not work on PlayStation 2.
- The "Unlock Levels" cheat code does not work on Xbox 360 and Windows.
Regional Differences#
Cheat Codes#
- The "Unlock Levels" cheat code does not work on PAL PlayStation 3.
Kung Fu Panda Game Trailer#
NTSC versions of the game include an option on the title screen to watch a trailer for Kung Fu Panda. This option is not present in PAL versions of the game.

Title Screen#
As with the movie on which it was based, the game uses the title Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa in English, but simply goes by Madagascar 2 in non-English localizations. The same title is transliterated in the Russian version as Мадагаскар 2.

Fix the Plane's Entrance#
When going to the Fix the Plane entrance to go back to The Watering Hole, you are able to move while the menu is open. For unknown reasons, this bug was only fixed in the European PlayStation 2 version.
