Limbo of the Lost

Limbo of the Lost is a point-and-click adventure game notable for its bizarre story and characters, extremely long development, and a frankly astonishing quantity of assets blatantly stolen from other games of its time.

Another unused line for the Sense interaction. There is a shorter version of this clip, which omits the lip smacking (YUCK.ogg), and that one IS used in the game.

B-now I think we need to keep to the plan.ogg

This line was presumably intended for some interaction regarding the creation of a sleeping potion for Grunger.

Unused Graphics#

Unused item icons#

Name

Icon

Notes

SPIRITGUIDE

This was an icon of Spirit Guide, an item that presumably served as the player's journal. None of the Spirit Guide's files exist in the 2005 demo.

SEVERED_ARMi

This icon might have been the old icon of Severed Arm from the Prologue. This icon does exist in the 2005 demo.

BIRDCAGEWGATOR

This icon implies that at some point during development of Chapter 1, it was possible to pick up the Bird Cage with the Woodgator without first covering it with Torn Cloth. This is not possible in the final game.

BIRDCAGEWGATORi

Ditto.

PILEOFBONESi

This icon might have been the old icon of Human Bone from Chapter 1.

QUAGMIRE_NOTE

At some point during development of Chapter 2, Quagmire was apparently supposed to provide his second riddle on a note. This is the icon for it.

SMALLKEY

It appears that at some point during development of Chapter 2, the player could obtain this key. Its purpose is unknown.

TUFTHAIR

It appears that at some point during development of Chapter 3, the player could obtain a Tuft of Hair as evidence in the investigation.

Unused item descriptions#

There exist descriptions of unused items, as well as one close-up image of an unused item.

Unused item sprites#

There exist .sprite files of unused items. Files like this are used primarily for frame-by-frame animations - they contain filepaths to the used frames, but do not contain actual graphics.

Name

Notes

XITEM fishingweight

This item was presumably intended to be used in Chapter 2 for a puzzle involving fishing, given the existence of a Fishing Reel, which is present in the game, but is useless.

XITEM hook

Ditto.

XITEM spiritguide

This item presumably served as the player's journal. None of the Spirit Guide's files exist in the 2005 demo.

Unused Briggs animations#

There are special idle animations for Briggs that are never used. They were originally used in the 2005 demo for generic responses, such as "I can't take that" and "Sorry, there's nothing happening".

Unused Seal of Sufferance animations#

At the end of every Chapter, the player is presented with an animation of spinning Seal of Sufferance. The more Chapters are completed, the more lights are present on the back of the Seal. There exist graphics for 6 and 7 Chapters being completed, but since the game has only 5 Chapters, they are never used.

Unused Ouija Board cursors#

When using the Ouija Board, the cursor changes its design. There are a few versions of it that go unused.

Cursor

Notes

In the 2005 demo, the Ouija Board featured a "Bye" button, which served the same purpose as Quit. The final game does have a Bye cursor, but since there is no Bye button, it goes unused.

This is a leftover from the older design of the Ouija Board from the 2005 demo.

Ditto.

Placeholder graphics#

"data/sprites/GFX TEMPLATES" contains a collection of placeholder graphics.

Unused Cutscenes#

There are certain cutscene animations that are not utilized in the final game.

Notes

LOTL-ClassedAsStealing.mp4

data\actors\BRIGGS\BRIGGS TALK\CLASSED AS STEALING

The voiceline for this cutscene is used in-game, but the associated animation is not. There exists no associated .sprite file for it.

data\cutscenes\briggsvscranny\extra.ogg
data\cutscenes\briggsvscranny\humanflesh.ogg

It appears that at one point, Cranny in the Prologue was supposed to drop hints regarding the missing ingredients. The files for these do exist in the 2005 demo, but as a frame-by-frame animation.

LOTL-EddCackle.mp4

data\cutscenes\briggsvsEDD\eddcackle.ogg

In the 2005 demo, Edd would cackle a few times during his cutscenes, but this is missing in the final game. Notably, this was a frame-by-frame animation in the 2005 demo, but is a video file in the final game.

data\cutscenes\briggsvsEDD\eddreturn002.ogg
data\cutscenes\briggsvsEDD\eddreturn003.ogg

In the 2005 demo, Edd would use these responses when repeatedly entering Grunger's room without the necessary item. In the final game, the code for this appears to be broken, and he only uses the eddreturn001.ogg response.

LOTL-NotGettingTooClose.mp4

LEV1\scenes\sprites\lev1r08\briggs002.sprite

When Briggs encounters the demon dogs in Chapter 1, he was apparently supposed to have an extra line that ends up being unused.

LEV1\cutscenes\briggsvsONEGUS\onegus16.ogg
LEV1\cutscenes\briggsvsONEGUS\briggs13.ogg
LEV1\cutscenes\briggsvsONEGUS\briggs14.ogg

It appears that at one point, O'Negus in Chapter 1 was supposed to reprimand Briggs for tampering with his soul cabinet. Briggs's voiceline "I need to switch one item for a similar item" it used, but the associated animation is not.

LOTL-Shoemaker.mp4

LEV3\cutscenes\Shoemaker\NPC007.ogg

There exists an extra line from the Cobbler in Chapter 3, which goes unused.

LOTL-DannySkurgeNever.mp4

LEV3\cutscenes\DANNY SKURGE\NPC010.ogg

There exists an extra line from Danny Skurge in Chapter 3, which goes unused. It implies that Briggs was at one point meant to accuse Danny's brother.

LOTL-FindShoemaker.mp4

LEV3\cutscenes\FINDS SHOEMAKER VICTIM\briggs001.ogg

It appears that when picking up items at the site of the Cobbler's death in Chapter 3, Briggs was meant to make this remark, but it's never used.

Bugs#

Watch on YouTubeOne bug that is different between different releases is that in the European version, one of the cutscenes in Chapter 4 is corrupted, while in the North American version, it plays correctly.
