Unused Graphics#

Animation Frames#

Giratina#

Pre-release screenshot from April 2008, which shows this unused sprite. Pokemon-Platinum-Giratina-Unused.pngPokemon-Platinum-Giratina-Unused2.png

Alternate unused animation frames for Giratina's Altered and Origin forms, respectively. The game uses different sprites for the different animation frames. The unused sprite for its Origin form was actually shown in a pre-release screenshot.

Shaymin#

An alternate unused animation frame for Shaymin in its Land Form; however, different sprites are used for the first and second animation frames.

Cherrim (Sunshine form)#

Cherrim's Sunshine form has both an unused front and back sprite frame for a sending out animation, which is normally impossible to see. Cherrim always enters the battle in the Overcast form, even when the sun is already active. The 2nd frame front sprite was cleaned up a little from the one in Diamond/Pearl.

NPCs and Objects#

ketsuban#

The sprite is a placeholder that occupies twelve slots. The red text reads "ketsuban", which translates to "missing number".

bigman#

A different version of the large NPC's sprite. The unused version looks more stretched-out, making the sprite seem fat.

girl1#

This sprite set is in the style of FireRed and LeafGreen. The developers actually went for a similar design in early versions of Diamond and Pearl.

man1#

Same as above, but this time it depicts a green-haired male NPC.

Rotom#

Unused

Used

Early gray versions of the Rotom items can be found in the files for overworld sprites. Their filenames are firebox, skybox, icebox, waterbox and grassbox. It is worth noting that these are actually found after the used sprites.

Unused Items#

While the Member Card and Oak's Letter that went unused in Diamond & Pearl were made obtainable by event in Platinum, the rest of the unused items from it were all carried over to Platinum unchanged; see that game's page for more details.

Unused Text#

Text archive 602 (as seen in DSPRE; pt.602 in Poké Corpus) contains the dialogues for characters invited to the Villa. Two lines from the Japanese release appear blanked out in every international version. The dialogue suggests Caitlin and Darach were planned as visitors.

ID

Japanese

Translation

pt.602.97

カトレア『……いい べっそうね

Caitlin: … Nice villa, isn't it?

pt.602.98

コクラン『おじょうさま
そろそろ キャッスルに……

Darach: Lady Caitlin, we shall be at the Castle soon…

Unused Roaming Darkrai#

Watch on YouTubeIn the game's files, there is data for an unused encounter with a roaming Darkrai at Lvl. 40. It is released on the map if one executes script command 0x21C with its parameter set to 0x2. The existence of this battle suggests that Darkrai was originally planned to be caught in the same fashion as its counterpart Cresselia, rather than being a stationary opponent at the event-exclusive Newmoon Island. This data also exists in Pokémon Diamond & Pearl.

Unused Music#

The entire soundbank from Diamond & Pearl is carried over. As such, every sequence unused in Diamond & Pearl naturally goes unused here too, with a few that were previously used now no longer being so as well. The file "sound_data.sdat" is the same from Diamond & Pearl, and is completely unused.

SEQ_TITLE00#

The opening theme from Diamond & Pearl. The opening ambience is altered mildly in Platinum, though the track is otherwise identical.

SEQ_TV_HOUSOU#

SEQ_TV_END#

Two ominous themes used upon starting a new file in Diamond & Pearl, where a report about a red Gyarados plays on the protagonist's TV. This scenario was changed to a report about Professor Rowan returning from the Kanto region in Platinum, with calmer music playing instead.

40

Lowers opponent's Evasion by 2 stages.

4A

Unused Contest Effect#

Earn +2 for each

しんさいんが

Judge: +2
しんさいんが
かさなるごとに+2

Effect 0x03 is a unique unused contest effect that is intended to increase appeal by two extra points every time the same judge is chosen. However, this function is incomplete and doesn't seem to work. It also comes with proper text and in-game descriptions.

Unseen Terrain Effects#

The only marsh tiles that can be battled upon are located in the Great Marsh, where Pokémon moves can't be used, but the handful of moves that change based on the terrain type still have specific effects for marsh terrain coded in.

Move

Effect

Camouflage

Changes user's type to Ground

Nature Power

Becomes the move Mud Bomb

Secret Power

May lower the target's Speed by 1 stage; uses the animation of Mud Shot

This effect for Camouflage is shared with the used ones for sand and for plain terrain, but the other two are completely unique. Burmy would become Plant Cloak if it were to battle here.

(Source: Bulbapedia)

Unused Battle Platforms#

Twelve new battle platforms were added in Platinum, doubling the amount from Diamond/Pearl; however, two of them are still unused.

ID

Image

Notes

03

Grass

Seed Bomb

Causes sleep (Needle Arm animation)

Plant

Uses the same set of effect as tall grass. This appears to be a platform for puddle tiles; however, in Generation IV, puddle tiles instead load the location's default battle platform. In Black and White and Black 2 and White 2, fights triggered on puddles do properly load a unique platform.

0B

Flying

Air Slash

Lowers evasiveness 1 stage (Gust animation)

Trash

Loads glitched version of the marsh platforms, which is different than what happens in Diamond/Pearl. This unique set of effects would be eventually used in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire for soaring and Sky Pillar (although Secret Power instead lowers Attack). The Secret Power uses a move effect that's otherwise unused in Generation IV games.

(Source: Bulbapedia)

Unused Wild Held Item Data#

Some Pokémon, when found in the wild, have a chance of holding an item. This held item data also exists for some Pokémon which cannot be caught in the wild in the final game, however, rendering these assignments unused.

Unused Pokétch Apps#

Unused Pal Park Species Data#

When transferring Pokémon from Generation III games into Platinum through the Pal Park feature, the location and appearance rate for each one as well as the score bonus for catching it are determined on a per-species basis. As with Diamond and Pearl, every species in the game has unique data for this, including those that are newly-introduced to Generation IV and therefore cannot be encountered in Pal Park during normal gameplay.

Arceus#

This wasn't the religious experience I was expecting, honestly. The unused ???-type Arceus.

The Hall of Origin event from Diamond and Pearl still exists in Platinum. Arceus also still has its ??? form from Diamond and Pearl. Since the only difference visually is a palette swap, nothing needed to be updated for it to work with the new animations.

Arceus also has a Shiny palette for each of its 18 forms. Because the only way to obtain it legitimately was through distributions, the Shiny version of Arceus was left unobtainable through normal means. However, with the unused Hall of Origin event, the player is theoretically able to catch Shiny Arceus. Shiny Arceus was later made available as a distribution via serial code in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire with the purchase of tickets to the 18th Pokémon movie, and was finally made available worldwide in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl after update 1.3.0.

Oddities#

Stat Trainers#

The overworld sprites for the so-called "Stat Trainers" are listed as seven1 to seven5. This indicates that two more characters were planned to be added, further supported by the fact that the sprites are followed by two placeholders (ketsuban).

Leaked document DP全仕様一覧051110.xls, which mentions the features of the upcoming Diamond and Pearl games, has the following text about the stat trainers:

Japanese

Translation

7人衆
主人公とタッグを組めるトレーナー達。左右非対称な容姿。各場所に居る。ポケッチで呼び出そう。

The Seven Trainers
These are trainers that can team up with the main character. They have an asymmetrical appearance and can be found in various locations. The protagonist can ask for their help through the Pokétch.

 ・弟子
7人衆の一人。

The disciple is one of the Seven Trainers.
