This game/console's online features are no longer supported. |
Phantasy Star 0 is a return to form for the Online subseries as it takes gameplay elements from the original Phantasy Star Online as opposed to Phantasy Star Universe. The game is also notable for using a Pictochat-inspired system to get around Nintendo's limitations.

Regional Differences#
Opening Movie#
|
Japan |
International |
|---|---|
The game's opening movie was almost changed completely; The Japanese version opening song, "Makenai Kokoro (負けないココロ, roughly translating to Undefeated Heart)" by Hatsune Okumura, was replaced with an abridged version of the game's original title theme as its opening theme. Furthermore, the bottom screen is used to display the game's opening credits in the Japanese version while the international versions use the same background displayed on the bottom screen which is normally used for other instances of animated cutscenes in the game.
Title Screen#
|
Japan |
International |
|---|---|
The game's original title theme was used in the title screen in the Japanese version. As the opening song was changed in the international versions a new theme is used for the title screen and the original title theme is used in part of the ending cutscene. This game was the first game to begin the trend of removing the game's Katakana spelling from the international versions' logo.
Crossover Items#
The Japanese version has a lot of items based off of Nintendo properties such as Zelda, Mario, and Metroid. These were removed from the international versions.
Furthermore, since the game supports cross-region Multiplayer with the Japanese version, if a Japanese version player with one of such item plays with a player from the international versions, the model of the item will appear differently on the other player's screen.
Item Codes#
The game has a system wherein players could obtain special items by inputting a special code into a Vending Machine. All the Item Codes were changed in the international versions and some items in this system were removed and replaced with other items.

Anti-Piracy#
This game utilizes the DS Protect anti-piracy library to ensure that it is not being run off a flashcart or emulator. If any of the DS Protect checks fail, the game will freeze when creating a character (Japanese version) or reduce drop rates and make them appear offline in online play (international versions).
The Japanese version of the game uses DSProtect 1.05, while international versions use DSProtect 1.20.
